Search begins today for UA president

The Arizona Board of Regents announced the members of the Presidential Search Committee this week. The committee will choose UA President Manuel Pacheco's successor.

Pacheco announced Jan. 8 that he plans to resign at the end of his current contract, which expires Dec. 31.

After six years of service, Pacheco said it was time for him to consider new options.

The search committee will hold its first meeting today at 12:15 p.m. in the Memorial Student Union Rincon Room. The meeting is open to the public.

The members of the committee are:

Regents:

  • John Munger, chairman

  • Hank Amos

  • Kurt Davis

  • Judy Gignac

  • Jonathan Schmitt

  • Frank Besnette, ex-officio member.

UA Faculty:

  • Lawrence Aleamoni, ed-cational psychology professor

  • Michael Cusanovich, vice president for research and graduate studies

  • Susan Heckler, associate professor of marketing

  • Travis Hirschi, regents professor of sociology

  • N. Scott Momaday, regents professor of English

  • Joaquin Ruiz, head of the geosciences department

  • John Schwarz, political science professor.

UA Students:

  • Wendelyn R. Nichols-Julien, political science and regional development senior

  • Rhonda Wilson, accounting and finance senior and Associated Students president.

From the community at-large:

  • Edith Auslander, journalist and former regent

  • Jennifer Aviles, admini-strative associate for the Commission on the Status of Women

  • Joseph Cesare, owner of Broadway Realty and Trust, co-owner of the Viscount Suites Hotel
