Bibby, Terry answer call

As thousands of Wildcat faithful were finding their seats for the Southern Cal game all around him, Mike Bibby warmed up alone.

All the smiling faces, taking in the aura of McKale Center, were in a distant place.

His focus on the rim was unwavering. His intensity was razor-sharp.

Most of it had to do with it being a big game - the loss to UCLA on Thursday, his father coaching the opposing team and the expectations that are on his shoulders.

His counterpart Jason Terry was loose, livid and keen to all the eyes that were looking upon him.

Terry initiated the high-fives that Bibby stared right through. Two different styles that, come game time, wind up seeing eye-to-eye.

Terry's role is now creating a spark off the bench while Bibby's is to take control from the start. With the athletic ability of Miles Simon and Michael Dickerson, it's easy to forget just how important the two point guards are.

Against UCLA, the duo made only 3 of 16 shots and had nine turnovers. On Saturday, they combined for 34 points, six rebounds and six assists - Arizona won by 24.

"I thought that Bibby played an excellent game, and Jason came in and gave us a big lift right off," UA head coach Lute Olson said. "It looked to me early that USC's energy was not where it needed to be and Mike went right after them."

UA assistant coach Jessie Evans knew right from the start that the guards were ready.

"I thought they were very focused, you could see it in their eyes. We came out with a fire."

Bibby attacked the basket from the get-go, something he didn't do in the two teams' first meeting, but the Wildcats couldn't convert their shots.

With six minutes gone, USC was leading 9-8. That's when Terry got the call.

He entered with the UA offense acting lethargic, and was like a shot of double espresso. He hit a hanging, one handed lay-up just inside the free-throw line and then buried a three-pointer on the next transition.

"I tried to come in and give the team a boost because we were kind of slow coming out," Terry said.

Arizona never trailed again, stretching their lead to as much as 25 points.

USC's best shooter, Stais Boseman had no comment afterwards. He just put his hands over his head and tried to hide it between his legs.

With the last Henry and Mike Bibby meeting turning into a media spectacle, UA's Bibby did his only talking on the floor.

Meanwhile, Terry proved how potent he can be, even if it is in a backup situation.

"I have been coming off the bench all my life, it doesn't bother me. I'll play whenever," Terry said.

"JT's confidence is high right now, that important's for us," Dickerson said.

"You know that he (Terry) is going to play well defensively, but any time he contributes offensively we are a much better team," Olson said.
