Arizona men shutout by USC and UCLA

The men's tennis team had a rough trip back to Tucson.

There may not have been any turbulence on the plane and the wheels were not flat when the plane landed, but the same cannot be said about some of the passengers on board.

The 17th-ranked Wildcats (3-2 overall, 0-2 in the Six-Pac) returned from Los Angeles without a single point on the scoreboard in two matches.

"It was just like the wheels fell off this weekend," head coach Bill Wright said. "We had a wheel-less trip home."

Southern Cal and UCLA swept Arizona, 7-0 in the Wildcat's conference opener this weekend.

The match between the No. 21 Trojans (4-1, 1-0) on Saturday at Marks Stadium was better than the score indicated.

"We needed four matches to win and we were in all four matches at the midpoint of the match(es), but then the cards just didn't fall," Wright said.

The match against the second-ranked Bruins on Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center was even worse.

"We knew they were going to be really tough matches and we just really came out flat," said senior Henrik Wagner.

The Bruins continued their winning ways in the singles matches with four wins.

"These schools are a heck of a lot farther ahead then us," Wright said.
