Police Beat

University police arrested a UA student Thursday after the discovery of a reportedly stolen parking permit in his vehicle north of Coronado Resident Hall, 822 E. Fifth St.

UA Parking and Transportation employees immobilized the student's car with a "boot" device at 11:40 a.m. in Lot 5045 after determining the car's permit was reported stolen in September, police reports stated.

The student, Aaron S. Gallick, 19, of the 7700 block of East Windriver Road, told police he bought the permit for $50 from a man in his class last semester, reports stated.

Gallick said the man sold him the permit, which is marked "non-transferable" on the back side, because he would not be back in the fall, and that he only saw the permit peddler twice, reports stated.

Police cited Gallick on theft and possession of stolen property charges and released him.

A student reported Thursday that his backpack was stolen during a 20-minute period at the Main Library, 1510 E. University Blvd.

The student told university police that he left his backpack on the floor near a fourth-floor table at 2:30 p.m. and came back 20 minutes later to find his $50 backpack missing, along with his credit card, $15 in cash, house keys and Bank of America checkbook.

A student reported the theft of jewelry from her car Wednesday after she returned from classes and noticed one of its windows had been shattered while parked in a lot at East Sixth Street and North Fremont Avenue.

The student told university police she left her vehicle at 9 a.m. and returned at 1 p.m. to find her right rear window broken, police reports stated.

She told police the car's door had been unlocked through the window and someone had taken a $500 pair of earrings, a $150 make-up case and miscellaneous jewelry valued at $100.

Two Kappa Sigma fraternity members returned a piece of particle board Thursday after Chi Omega sorority members told university police they saw them take the wood from a construction site near their house, 1145 N. Mountain Ave.

Police went to the Kappa Sigma fraternity house, 1423 E. First St., at 11:21 p.m. and told the chapter president that sorority members had watched the two men carry a 4-by-8-foot piece of pressed board from the construction site.

The two Kappa members admitted conspiring to take the particleboard because they wanted to use it as a cover for their pool and ping-pong table, police reports stated.

The construction site is part of Chi Omega property, and sorority members agreed not to press charges after the wood was returned to the site.

A Tucson woman's credit card was used to make an ATM withdrawal Tuesday night after it was taken from a locker in the Student Recreation Center, 1400 E. Sixth St.

The woman told university police she noticed her credit card missing Wednesday night and immediately notified the company, but found someone had already made a transaction of an unknown amount at an automated teller machine.

She said she believes her card was taken from a locker in the Rec Center between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., police reports stated.

The culprit, however, did not take the cash in her wallet, reports stated.

A UA student reported her car stolen Thursday after she returned to the lot where she had parked it and found another vehicle parked in its spot at East Ninth Street and North Fremont Avenue.

The woman told university police that she parked her 1989 Oldsmobile Delta '88 at 9 a.m. in Lot 9001 and returned about 4 p.m. to find broken glass under the car parked where hers had been.

Records check indicated there was no reason the vehicle might have been towed.

Police Beat is compiled from official University of Arizona Police Department reports.
