Women's tennis to play dual matches, men at doubles tourney

Before gripping tennis rackets this weekend, UA's women's tennis team will greet its Pacific 10 Conference adversaries with salutations and respect.

"We have exactly the same mind set for this weekend that we have had all year," senior Betsy Miringoff said. "We treat every team the same - respect everyone, fear no one."

No. 23 Arizona (6-2, 3-1 Pac-10), who shelved a 5-4 win over eighth-ranked Arizona State last weekend, meet fifth-ranked Stanford and seventh-ranked California this weekend in Northern California.

"Stanford and Cal are good, solid teams and pretty experienced so we're going in as underdogs, but we have an opportunity to really upset people," UA head coach Stephanie London said.

Stanford, the reigning national champions, are currently 13-0 (4-0 Pac-10). The Cardinal has not lost in 32 straight matches, and possess two of the top 10 singles players in its lineup.

"Our conference is so tough and we don't get much of a break so we have to be prepared every match," London said.

The Bears (9-2) were edged 5-4 by Stanford last weekend and are led by No. 22 Amanda Agustus, a victor in 17 matches this season.

Two Arizona men's doubles pairs will compete at the 102nd-annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Tennis Club in La Jolla, Calif., this weekend.

Superman sophomore Michel Stopa and his partner, senior Jerome Oliveri, accompany freshmen Brian Jackson and Mike Huss as UA representatives in the tournament.

Jackson and Huss, UA's third set of doubles partners, have played together once this season and got tuned out, 8-2, by Utah in the February home match.

Stopa and Oliveri have managed to win twice this season and stand at 2-4.

A sundry of elite NCAA doubles teams and non-collegiate amateurs comprise the tournament field.
