The UA football team recently announced that a new running backs coach has been hired.

Jeff Woodruff, 41, was most recently the head football coach at Tucson's Cholla High School and a former offensive coordinator at Washington.

As head coach for the past two seasons, Woodruff helped improve the program from one that won four games in three years, to one that finished 4-6 and 5-5 during his two seasons.

He served as Washington's offensive coordinator in 1992 and 1993 and quarterback coach from 1991-93. He also spent seven seasons coaching wide receivers under then-head coach Don James, his father-in-law.

The Kent State graduate had six wide receivers selected to the NFL Draft while at Washington.

Head coach Dick Tomey said Woodruff fits in well with the UA program.

"Jeff's experience at Washington with all offensive skill positions and as coordinator during their championship year will be invaluable to our program," he said.

Briefly

During an Arizona Diamondbacks pre-game program on May 17 when the team plays Pittsburgh, Arizona will celebrate the state of Israel's 50th birthday.

The program will include the singing of the Israeli national anthem as well as the regular American national anthem and a special reading of the words of David Ben-Gurion proclaiming Israel a sovereign state.

"With such a large Jewish community presence in Arizona, we're excited to be a part of this celebration," said Jeff Golner, marketing coordinator/game operations for the team.

UA women's basketball player Adia Barnes continues to shine in the awards arena.

Tuesday, Barnes was presented with yet another honor at the Support-A-Park Luncheon.

She was named Raytheon Systems Company Sports Woman of the Year at the luncheon which was put on by the Tucson Parks Foundation.
