Arizona Daily Wildcat March 25, 1998 Men's golf team ties for fifth at Texas tourneyThe second ranked Arizona men's golf team finished the Cleveland Golf/Morris Williams Intercollegiate tied for fifth place with Texas. The two-day, three-round tournament was held at the Hills Country Club (par 72, 6,954 yards) in Austin, Texas. Arizona fired team scores of 295 and 294, for a total team score of 13-over par 589 during the first day Monday to enter yesterday's round in fourth place. The Wildcats shot a 3-over par 291 yesterday to round out the event with a total score of 17-over par 881. The mark was nine shots behind Houston and Florida, who tied for first at 8-over par 872. UA senior Rory Sabbatini was the overall individual leader after the first day (3-under 141) but ended the tournament in a four-way tie for 12th place at 5-over par 221. Yesterday, he struggled, finishing the round at 8-over par 80. Texas' Brad Elder placed first with a 5-under par 211 total. UA's Derek Gillespie finished in a two-way tie for 17th at 7-over par 223. The rest of the Arizona lineup included Tim Beans, who tied for 24th at 9-over par 225; Andy Barnes and Tim Weiss, who tied for 32nd at 11-over par 227 and Ryan Meyer, who tied for 45th at 15-over par 231.
The Arizona women's golf team is tied for the lead with Louisiana State after the first day of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Wahine Intercollegiate in Hawaii. The Wildcats shot a team score of 14-over par 302, putting them three strokes ahead of third-place Oregon. The three-day event is being held at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course (par 72, 6,552 yards) in Honolulu. Ashley Winn of LSU leads the individual tournament after shooting a four-under par 68. UA senior Krissie Register is in a four-way tie for second after carding a one-over par 73. The second round of the tournament begins this morning.
