"Sherlock Holmes"

Tucson is a long way from Scotland Yard, but that isn't stopping those zany folks at The Gaslight Theatre (7010 E. Broadway Blvd.) from bringing Britain's most notorious sleuth to the stage. "Sherlock Holmes" will be chock-full of mystery and all the expected witticism of Sir Holmes, with a musical, melodramatic twist. A special preview tonight at 8 kicks off performances, which will continue Wednesdays-Sundays through May 30. Tickets are $13.95, $11.95 with student ID. Phone 886-9428 for ticket info.

Get down to the hard-core rap sounds and the demonicly painted faces of Insane Clown Posse at 7 tonight at the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. Congress, with guests Myzery and Twiztid. Holly McNarland

Bran Van 3000 performs at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress, with Canadian newcomer Holly McNarland. McNarland's debut album, Stuff, has been certified gold in Canada and she has toured with Live, the Wallflowers and Our Lady Peace. Tickets are $4. As always, Thursday is also '80s Night, so get into your best acid-washed jeans and dance to the nostalgic tunes of the greed decade, provided by DJ Spyder. Phone 622-8848.

Hear them roar: Tucson playwright Elaine Romero and Invisible Theatre Associate Producer/Literary Manager Deborah Dickey will lead a discussion concerning the progress of women in contemporary theater at the Invisible Theatre, 1400 N. First Ave. at 7:30 p.m. Romero and Dickey will share information from the New York City conference, "Women in Theatre: Mapping the Sources of Power," at which they were both present. Al Perry

Tonight it's Al Perry and the Cattle with D-Liar and the Hillbilly Hellcats at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress. Perry is more than simply a local legend; he's known throughout the country and parts of the world as an inventive force in alt-country, fusing the traditional twang of players like Hank Williams and George Wills with sounds usually associated with the garage. Tonight expect many a Cattle instrumental number in tribute to the great Link Wray. D-Liar and the Hillbilly Hellcats will entertain you with their own special brand of rockabilly. Admission is $4. "Bedtime Story"

This is the last weekend to catch The Fifth Annual Festival of Irish Plays, a Live Theatre Workshop presentation of three one-act comedies, "The Rising of the Moon," "The Workhouse Ward," and "Bedtime Story." The plays star Lady Gregory and Sean O'Casey of the Abbey Theatre of Dublin. Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. You will find the fun at 5317 E. Speedway. Guess who will headline the KXCI Community Radio's Houserockin' Dance Party?? La-la-la-la-Los Lobos, that's who! From the barrios of L.A., this band emerged as a pioneer of Mexican-American rock, and who can forget its hit cover of "La Bamba"? This KXCI fund-raising event will be at the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. The Osgoods

Local rockers Shindig will play a special acoustic set - complete with bongos - tonight at Double Zero, 121 E. Congress, with fellow Tucson outfit The Osgoods making good on a promise to headline the bill. Catch some great tunes and some $1 well drinks while you're at it, at this 21-and-over show. The Mingus Big Band will be at Centennial Hall tonight at 8. Described by Jazztimes as "arguably the smokingest regularly performing big band on the planet," the band promises to provide an evening of cool grooves and swingin' tunes. Jungian analysts Lucy Sikes and Mary Dian Molton present a Jungian Celebration of Women in Film at St. Philip's in the Hills, 4440 N. Attention Japanimaniacs: The Tucson Animation Screening Society is hosting "Miyazaki," a day-long 'toon fest today in the Social Sciences Auditorium from 1-9:30 p.m. That's 8 1/2 hours, folks; plenty of time to soak up colorful goodies like "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind," "Kiki's Delivery Service," "Castle in the Sky Laputa," "Porco Rosso," and "Whisper of the Heart." Admission is free.

Her performance will include songs from her new album, Behind the Eyes, the creation of which she deemed a "personal challenge ... a complete self-examination." For all the WWII buffs out there: there will be a preview of Kindertransport at the Invisible Theatre, 1400 N. First Ave., at 7:30 p.m. The play centers on Eva Schlesinger, who, at age 9, was rescued from the Holocaust horrors of Germany. Over 40 years later, the Englishwoman who hides her origins examines the feelings spurred by her childhood wartime experiences. Tickets are $10. Phone 882-9721.

The Lorenzo Trio, a chamber music ensemble, will appear as part of the Faculty Artists Series at Crowder Hall at 8 p.m. The Trio features violinist Mark Rush, cellist Nancy Green and pianist Tannis Gibson. Phone 621-8517.

The musical "42nd Street" will be presented at Canyon del Oro High School, 25 W. Calle Concordia. "42nd Street" is about a "a young girl who gets a break on Broadway and becomes a star." The play is chock full o' tap-dancing, hit tunes, and humor "suitable for the whole family," so bring the 'rents. Wednesday, April 1

If this year's St. Patrick's Day festivities left you begging for more, check out the one and only Celtic traditional band visiting Tucson this spring, Altan, at the Berger Performing Arts Center at 1200 W. Speedway. Touted as one of today's top Irish bands, Altan blends the sounds of twin fiddles, accordion, cittern, guitar and percussion, featuring singing in both English and Gaelic. If you're a fan of Ben Harper's brand of rock-reggae-sometimes-even-a-little-bit-of-gospel fusion, tonight just might be a good night for a road trip to our lovely state's capital. Touring in support of his latest release, The Will to Live, Harper takes the stage at Hayden Square in Tempe, after openers, The Innocent Criminals. Showtime is 8 p.m., and tickets are $17, available through Dillard's in advance and at the door on the night of the show.
