By Bryon Wells Police BeatA student was thrown from his bicycle Wednesday after slamming into the passenger-side door of a vehicle parked on the UA Mall, in the 1500 block of East University Boulevard. The bicyclist told university police he was riding west on University Boulevard about 9 a.m. and tried to squeeze past a Toyota pickup truck that was parked near an access gate. He told police he thought he had enough room to clear the vehicle, but just as he approached, the passenger side door opened and he crashed into it. The owner of the truck, also a student, told police he parked his truck there because he was helping someone set up tables on the Mall. Another student who witnessed the collision told police that he saw the bicyclist approaching fast and hitting the door as it opened. The bicyclist was not injured and police could not detect any damage to his bike, reports stated. The truck sustained a dent to the passenger side door, and police gave both parties case numbers for their insurance purposes, reports stated. University police arrested a UA student Wednesday after a parking enforcement officer reported seeing him tamper with a parking "boot" attached to his truck parked in the 1700 block of East Enke Drive. The parking officer told police he saw a man, later identified as Reginal W. Hardy, 21, of the 1500 block of East Sixth Street, at about 8:22 p.m. messing with a parking boot attached to a 1979 Ford pickup. Police found Hardy walking in a parking lot at North Warren Road and East Enke Street minutes later, police reports stated. Hardy told police the booted truck was his and that he was only looking at the boot, reports stated. Police inspected the device and found that the keyhole had been damaged, the rubber trim was removed, and it looked as if it had been hit with something, reports stated. Hardy was cited on a criminal damage charge and released. A UA employee called university police Tuesday to report that somebody had taken three tampon dispensers from women's restrooms in various buildings around campus. The employee told police a student worker Monday went to replace tampons in the third-floor women's bathroom of the Modern Languages building, 1423 E. University Blvd., but found nothing to put them in, police reports stated. The student worker told her boss that the tampon dispenser had been lifted off of the bolts in the wall it had rested on, reports stated. The employee told police that two dispensers in restrooms at the Main Library, 1510 E. University Blvd., and the Science-Engineering Library, 744 N. Highland Ave., were also missing, apparently taken in the same manner, reports stated. The three Rochester Midland J-6 tampon dispensers had a total value of $515.67, and contained up to 27 tampons each, reports stated. A student reported her purse stolen Wednesday from under a desk at the Education building, 1230 E. Speedway Blvd. The student told police she left her purse under her desk in a second-floor room about 2 p.m., then went to work in a lab across the hall, police reports stated. She told police she returned at 5:30 p.m. to find her purse and wallet, valued at $100, missing, along with several credit and ATM cards, reports stated. The student told police she did not see anybody suspicious in the area and that she has since cancelled her credit cards. A student called university police Wednesday to report that somebody took his textbook from an office in the Modern Languages building, 1423 E. University Blvd. The student told police he left his $98 organic chemistry book in the third-floor office about 9:15 a.m. He returned 30 minutes later but could not find his textbook, police reports stated.
