Sidelines

On June 1, approximately 40 players who have been evaluated through the course of the collegiate season will be vying for a spot on the USA Baseball National Team.

One of Arizona's own has been invited to participate in the training camp that will take place at Hi Corbett Field, home of USA Baseball and Cactus League spring training base of the Colorado Rockies.

Omar Moraga was one of six collegiate players recently chosen to attend the 1998 USA Baseball National Team Trials.

The junior will try to earn one of only 22 slots on the team, which will begin preparation for the 1998 World Championship in Italy starting in mid-June.

The International Baseball Association's XXXIII World Championship is slated to take place July 21-Aug. 2 and will feature reigning title-holder Cuba as well as Italy, Korea and five teams from the Americas just to name a few.

Moraga's teammate, freshman Keoni DeRenne, was named earlier this season to the training camp roster.

Briefly

Freshman Kara Fry and senior Tenli Poggemeyer will travel to Los Angeles for the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships, which will be held at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion April 16-18. Of 12 all around competitors, Fry is the fifth seed while Poggemeyer is listed as the ninth seed. The gymnasts' all around scores at the Midwest Regionals last weekend were high enough to land them spots in the national all around championships. As a team, Arizona is one of the alternate teams. Twelve at-large bids were awarded and UA stands at No. 14.

Fry and junior Kristin McDermott were named to the 1998 Pacific 10 Conference All-Conference Gymnastics team in the all around. Meanwhile, seniors Cami Banholzer and Rose McLaughlin were named to the 1998 Pacific 10 Conference All Academic Women's Gymnastics honorable mention team.
