Laxcats to begin second season

They survived many struggles and injuries throughout the regular season and now with a new outlook and healthy lineup, the Laxcats begin round two of the 1998 lacrosse season.

The Laxcats (7-6) will meet up with the Loyola Marymount Lions in the quarterfinal game of the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League playoffs Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wildcat Field.

Earlier in the season UA defeated the Lions 14-10 at home.

"Everybody knows that they could beat us," junior attackman Dan McCarthy said. "It is a one-game season right now so we can't have any letdowns at all."

UA got the extra help it needed these past two weeks with the returns of senior midfielder Chris Greco and junior attackman Dan Price from injuries.

"We are a lot stronger than the last time we faced them," McCarthy said. "Price is our best attackman and Greco is our best and most intense face-off man."

For seniors Max Webber, Chris Stinson, Dave Ames and Greco, this game is a do-or-die situation. If they lose, their careers will come to a quick close. And if they pull out a victory, they get at least one more day in the sun.

"I don't want to go out with a loss at home," Ames said. "We have to beware of overconfidence, but I have faith in my team."

For a squad with a surplus of freshmen, the seniors have found leadership skills they will display when the first whistle blows on Saturday.

"Max Webber has been ripping the cage as of late," Ames said. "We needed to find some scoring production and Max has stepped it up."
