Sidelines

The Arizona men's golf team travels to Tempe for the 26th annual ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational, which begins Saturday .

The 54-hole tournament will be played on ASU's Karsten Golf Course with 36 holes played Saturday and 18 holes Sunday. This is the final tournament of the regular season for the Wildcats, as the Pacific 10 Conference Championships are up next April 27-29.

There will be a strong field competing in the tournament. Sixth-ranked Oklahoma State, seventh-ranked Texas Christian and No. 14 ASU will battle the Wildcats for the tournament title. At last year's tournament, the Wildcats finished in second place, five strokes behind tournament champion ASU.

For the Wildcats to do well, they will need senior Rory Sabbatini's consistent play to continue. The South African is still the top-ranked golfer in the nation. This is the sixth consecutive week Sabbatini has held this post. With his seven top-10 finishes this year, Sabbatini has proved himself to the golf world.

Sophomore Derek Gillespie also needs to play well for the Wildcats to have a shot. Gillespie is coming off a fifth place finish (2-under par 214) at the U.S. Collegiate Championships earlier this month. It was a welcome sign, due to the fact that Gillespie had been struggling in weeks past. Gillespie is ranked 22nd as of the April 8 rankings.
