By Bryon Wells Police BeatA student told university police Thursday he thinks somebody squeezed $140 from his wallet through the grates of his locker at Bear Down Gym, 1428 E. University Blvd. The student told police he put his wallet in his gym bag, then secured it in a locker about 2:30 p.m. while he worked out, police reports stated. He returned at 5 p.m. and discovered his cash missing. He told police his wallet was exposed in his gym bag, and he believes somebody could have removed the seven $20 bills through the small rectangular openings on either side of his locker, reports stated. Police later determined that a thief with tweezers could have reached through the grates and pulled the money through, reports stated. A student monitor went to work Saturday and discovered somebody had taken four computers from a lab at McClelland Hall, 1130 E. Helen St. The monitor told police the four Micron computer systems, including keyboards, CPU towers and monitors, were last seen in the lab at 5 p.m. Friday. When she opened the lab at 8 a.m. the next day, the computers, valued at $12,000, had been taken from the eastern-most counter opposite the monitor's desk, police reports stated. There was no sign of forced entry, and a computer lab manager later told police similar thefts occurred in December and February. On Feb. 25, an employee reported the theft of $8,500 worth of computer equipment from the same lab, in which a steel cable used to secure the machines was cut. The culprit may have propped open an exit door with a floor mat to get into the building, reports stated. University police arrested four non-students on trespassing charges Monday after discovering them making themselves at home in various campus locations. An employee at the Science-Engineering Library, 744 N. Highland Ave., called police at 3:32 a.m. and told them a man was asleep on a sofa in a first-floor lounge. Police arrived minutes later and woke the man, who identified himself as Mark C. Willis, 33, of a general delivery address. Willis told the officer he was not a UA student or staff member and that he was walking outside, came in to the library to rest and then fell asleep, police reports stated. A check indicated Willis had been previously warned for trespassing, and the officer escorted him off campus, cited him on a criminal trespassing charge and released him. The same officer at 9:10 a.m. asked a man who was using the showers at Bear Down Gym if he was a UA student or staff member, to which he replied, "No," reports stated. A check indicated the man, Daniel S. Granger, 41, of the 4000 block of East Monte Vista, had been warned for criminal trespassing once in December 1996 and again in January 1997, reports stated. The officer cited Granger, who said he frequently uses the showers at the gym, on a second-degree criminal trespassing charge and then released him, reports stated. The same officer was in the area of East University Boulevard and North Tyndall Avenue at 11:12 a.m. when he saw a man who had reportedly been seen on campus the day before wandering around, reports stated. David L. Anderson, 42, of a general delivery address, reportedly made a comment Sunday about a 5-year-old girl's underpants when he was near the child and her mother, reports stated. Anderson told police he made no such comments, and the officer warned him for trespassing. A check with the Tucson Police Department revealed Anderson had two warrants for third-degree criminal trespassing, and the officer later found Anderson in the area of East Speedway Boulevard and North Park Avenue. Anderson was arrested on a criminal trespassing charge and taken to the Pima County Jail, where he remained yesterday. Another officer discovered a man digging through a trash can around noon on the south side of Navajo-Pinal-Sierra Hall, 1557 E. Sixth St., who had been warned twice that day for trespassing on campus, reports stated. The man, identified as Mota Sanchez, 44, of a general delivery address, was cited on a criminal trespassing charge and then released, reports stated. Police Beat is compiled from official University of Arizona Police Department reports.
