The Jazz at the Institute series concludes tonight at 8 with a performance by the Gerry Hemingway Quartet, a foursome of euphonic genius. Accompanying the quartet will be Mat Bevel and his sculptural creations and lighting performances at the Mat Bevel Institute, 103 E. Second St.. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Don't miss a rare chance to peek inside the lavish interior of Luna Loca art/performance space, as The Starlite Desperation, Topset and The Cassadines perform tonight at 8:30. Rock on. Rob Halford of the legendary Judas Priest will be making a comeback at The Rialto Theatre along with Killing 4 and Parasite. This should be one blood-sucking, violent show. Well, maybe not. The spawn of reggae legend Bob "Tuff Gong" Marley have formed the band Julian and Damian Marley & the Uprising and they will be toking - I mean taking - the spotlight on the outside stage at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress, from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Ozomatli will be inside afterward. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Phone 622-8848.

Calling all inner children: Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D., discusses and signs her book, Potatoes not Prozac . The book is a study of how complex carbohydrates are a better alternative than Twinkies and anti-depressants for alleviating depression and controlling sugar sensitivity. DesMaisons will read at Barnes and Noble, 5130 E. Broadway Blvd., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

It's Mardi Gras in April when Louisiana-born, Grammy-award winning Queen Ida presents her Cajun/Creole style extravaganza, Zydeco! "Cajun Rhyme Machine" D.L. Menard and The Louisiana Aces will join the Queen in this performance art masterpiece which includes plenty of song, dance and chuckles. Centennial Hall, 8 p.m. Tickets are $15, $19 and $24. UA alumnus Christina Vivona is the featured artist in the Alumni Artist Series at Holsclaw Recital Hall. Vivona, a heavenly harpist, released a compact disc, Radiance, in February of 1997. Performance time is 2:30 p.m. Phone 621-8517 for ticket prices and reservations.

The Dinnerware Contemporary Art Gallery hosts the eco-friendly display Woven Together: An Exhibition in Tapestry. Artist Ann Keuper, who graduated the UA in 1991 with a master's degree in fine arts, uses everything from hand-dyed yarns and human hair to plastic bags and recyclable products to create intricate medieval tapestries. Free storytelling and poetry! Come support the fine literary efforts of UA undergraduates. Contributors to the award-winning UA literature/art magazine Persona will be reading their works in the Modern Languages Auditorium. The reading begins at 8 p.m. Phone 321-7760.

Isadora Duncan Dance Award winner and former UA dance faculty member Ellen Bromberg will present the premiere of her latest masterpiece "Falling to Earth" at the Intelligent Stage at Arizona Stage University in Tempe. "Falling to Earth" is combination of dance, performance art and visual image technology geared to the theme of the natural cycle of loss and renewal. Bromberg has collaborated with video artist Douglas Rosenberg and composer Don Mitchell to create a sophisticated sound/light sensing system that is activated by the dancers' movements - kind of like a Touch Me lamp! Pima Community College hosts its annual juried exhibition of student art work through May 13 at the West Campus Art Gallery, Center for the Arts.
