A student who claimed he had bought a Zone 1 parking permit for $20 from a man on the University of Arizona Mall was cited on a theft charge Wednesday after university police discovered the permit had previously been reported stolen.

Police talked to the student, Shawn B. Summers, 21, of the 3200 block of E. Fort Lowell Road, at UA Parking and Transportation Services, located in the University Services Building, 888 N. Euclid Ave., police reports stated.

Summers told police he bought the permit from a man named John some time ago, but became evasive when asked more about the purchase, reports stated.

A check indicated Summers had reported his own permit lost earlier in the semester, and the permit he bought from "John" had been reported stolen by another student September 1997, reports stated.

Summers was cited on a theft charge and then released, reports stated.

Police could not locate the owner of the stolen permit at the time of the report.

Ten oil paintings valued at $3,000 were reported stolen Wednesday from a common area of the La Paz Residence Hall, 602 N. Highland Ave.

The La Paz hall director told university police a custodial worker noticed the paintings missing April 10 from a first-floor common area usually left unlocked 24 hours a day.

The hall director said she placed signs around the dorm in an attempt to get the paintings returned and called police after receiving no replies, police reports stated.

The paintings were all original commissioned oil works, and police intend to investigate the theft, reports stated.

Graffiti taggers struck again Wednesday, leaving their marks on the third level of the Park Avenue Garage, 1140 N. Park Ave.

While conducting a building check at 7:35 a.m., an officer noticed somebody spray-painted a green eye and the initials "BR" on a wall on the northwest corner of the third level, police reports stated.

The stylized green and red lettering was similar to graffiti discovered April 16 at the Main Gate Parking Structure, 815 E. Second St., in which the initials "BIR," "UCA" and "SIC" were painted in 3-foot by 7-foot lettering on a wall on the fourth floor, reports stated.

Police Beat is compiled from official University of Arizona Police Department reports.
