Rain delays tennis championships

The Arizona Wildcats were stopped short of advancing to the second bracket of the Pacific 10 Conference Men's Tennis Championships after a soggy first day of competition yesterday.

All four men's singles matches featuring UA players ended in a loss as rains fell through a muggy night in Ojai, Calif.

UA senior Roland Kupka lost to Jean-Noel Grinda of UCLA 6-1, 6-4, while team captain Jerome Oliveri suffered a 7-6, 6-2 defeat to Roman Kukal of USC.

On the women's side of the net, matches went late into the night, but the Wildcats pulled out victories in two of the three matches completed.

Junior Monique Allegre overcame a first set loss to down Esther Knox of California 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, while freshman Michelle Gough rolled over Erica Stoloff of Washington 6-0, 6-2.

Senior Vicky Maes faced a tough first round opponent from Stanford, and came out on the losing end of a 7-6, 6-3 score.

In the Pac-10 Singles Invitational Tournament, sophomore Jean-Noel Lacoste stamped out Washington's Jeremy Berman 6-2, 6-4, and junior Pascal Salasca also advanced to the second round with straight a straight set victory over Ryan Hollis of USC 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Mike Huss was softened by Scotty Scott of Stanford 6-0, 6-1.

First-round doubles matches will commence today. Invitational matches will also resume after a rain delay yesterday.
