One of the Arizona baseball team's pitchers shined through this weekend
at Arizona State, but it was nothing new for him. Ryan Moskau, the
UA's left-handed closer, picked up the win Friday and snagged the save Sunday.
For Moskau, it was his seventh save of the season and the 13th of his career,
tying him for the all-time UA mark. Moskau has been nearly untouchable in
his career against Arizona State, not allowing a run over 11 1/3 innings
while giving up only six hits and two walks while striking out 11.
Freshman shortstop Keoni DeRenne has broken a number of freshman
individual records and is closing in on several others. He is now the all-time
leader in RBI (53) and co-leader in doubles (15). He is one run short of
the all-time mark of 64, set by Anaheim Angel Damon Mashore in 1989. He
is also close to reaching Mashore's hit record (79), needing just three
more. Plus, he is two short of Mashore's record for walks (40). DeRenne
gets his shot at breaking those records and more against Grand Canyon tonight
and at California this weekend.
The UA volleyball team is experimenting with a few scoring systems
during its spring tournaments, as the NCAA Championship Committee is having
schools across the country test three methods. The following is an explanation
of the proposed systems:
- A 14-minute clock that starts when the ball is served and stopped when
the play is called dead. Match is rally scored with no mercy rule.
- 50-point rally score with match going to the team that wins two games.
- Two halves in the match, with the first two games played to 21 using
rally scoring. If the teams are tied at one, they will play one game to
seven. The second half consists of the same format. If the teams are tied
at the end of the second half, they will play a final game to 15.
The NCAA is proposing to change its current best-of-five 15-point match
system for the 1999 season.
UA head coach Dave Rubio, who prefers the 14-minute clock system, said
Pacific 10 Conference coaches will discuss the three methods during their
meeting in June and come to a consensus. He added that most coaches he has
talked to like the two half method best.
Rubio said changes are occurring in order to make the contests more exciting.
"I truly believe we need to go to a rally format from a fan-interest
standpoint," he said, adding that the ability to televise matches was
also a factor.
"The biggest problem (currently) with T.V. is that you can't predict
when a match will be over," he said.
Another change includes awarding two points for a kill from the back
row.
This past weekend proved to be successful for the UA track and field
team. Specifically, two Wildcats recorded "huge times" at the
Drake Relays, according to assistant coach Dawn Mortenson.
Freshman Patrick Nduwimana ran the sprint medley where he finished
second in the 800-meter leg with a time of 1:47.20.

Carolyn Jackson |
Sophomore Carolyn Jackson came in third place in the Special Invitational
400 with a personal best time of 52.56. Her personal best also happens to
be just a mere second off the school record. Jackson is currently ranked
sixth in the nation following this weekend's event.
Mortenson said both runners should make quite an impact at Nationals
and that "everyone should look to them to do big things," considering
the fact that they both still have a few years left of eligibility.
They will get another opportunity to shine as Arizona hosts a meet with
ASU and Northern Arizona this weekend. And, the weekend following, the track
and field team will welcome teams to the Arizona Elite Classic.
The following UA women swimming and diving members were named
to the Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic first team: seniors Kelly Blackstock
(3.69 in physiological sciences), Heather Branstetter (3.74 in exercise
and sport sciences) and Shannon Hosack (3.30 in family studies). Junior
Casey Legler was named to the second team, as she holds a 3.78 in fine arts.
For the men, Chris Bundy was an honorable mention selection.
