Staff Reports CalenderThursday, April 30Guess what? Opera can be funny! See for yourself and go to the "comic opera" titled "The Marriage of Figaro," by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The Edwardian-era story is a jumble of dilemmas, philanderings and adolescent hormones. Sounds like an Aaron Spelling production, but it's actually presented by the School of Music and Dance in Crowder Hall. Performances are in English, and run tonight through Saturday at 8 p.m.; Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for UA faculty/staff, and $6 for students, children and seniors. Friday, May 1What the cluck!? Alterna-rockers Jimmy's Chicken Shack will be clucking it up in an all-ages show at the Rialto Theatre tonight. Chronic Future, one of the "next big things" out of Phoenix, will open the show, along with Anything's Good. Rialto Theatre is at 318 E. Congress. Participants in the UA's "Toward a Science of Consciousness" conference will lead a consciousness-raising poetry reading at Club Congress, from 10 p.m. to midnight. Saturday, May 2Get a head start on Cinco de Mayo at the SS Peter & Paul Catholic School's Annual "Fiesta de Mayo" The fun starts with a Mexican dinner, which you can burn off afterwards dancing to the Mariachi music. If you have two left feet, take hints from the Folklorico dancers who will be undulating to the beat as well. Gramer Hall, SS Peter & Paul School, 1436 N. Campbell. Sunday, May 3If you think your childhood sucked ... Author Gene Cartwright will be reading from his book I Never Played Catch With My Father at Barnes & Noble, from 2 to 3 p.m. Cartwright and his book of woes are scheduled to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show soon, as part of the much-coveted "Oprah Book Club" series. Comedy -prop buffoon Vic Dunlop will appear - complete with googly-eye glasses, plastic vomit and a whole lot more - at Laffs Comedy Caffe for the benefit biannual Latino Comedy Night. The event is sponsored by Budweiser, Bank of America and Desert Diamond Casino, three fun-loving corporations if ever there were any. Tuesday, May 5Eat to the Beat Productions, bringers of all things musical during daily meals, presents its End of the Year Barbecue today, featuring the Annie Hawkins Band. "Metamortified" is the title of a new exhibition of work by Tucson artists now running at the Tucson/Pima Arts Council, 240 N. Stone Ave. The theme of this exhibit is "Tucson Artists Reflecting on the State of the Arts in Tucson;" with more than 20 area artists contributing, it's a diverse and intriguing look at the arts in the Old Pueblo.
