Arizona survives tight nightcap
The top-ranked Arizona softball team continued its dominance over arch
rival Arizona State last night with a doubleheader sweep in Tempe, the Wildcats
32nd and 33rd consecutive wins over the Sun Devils.
Seniors Alison McCutcheon and Nancy Evans led the way, leading their
team to an opening-game 6-0 victory as Evans allowed just four hits in earning
her 27th victory of the season while McCutcheon collected two hits and scored
twice.
In the nightcap, Evans' performance again proved pivotal as she garnered
her third save of the season, pitching the seventh inning of a 3-2 victory
in relief of freshman Becky Lemke.
McCutcheon collected three more hits and scored her fourth run of the
night as the Wildcats hung on for the nail-biting win. The senior center
fielder also collected three stolen bases to add to her season total, but
was caught stealing for the first time this season.
Freshman Nicole Giordano provided some added offensive power in the opener
with a triple and four RBI while sophomore Katie Swan collected a triple
as part of her two hits in the game.
Evans struck out nine while walking only one Sun Devil batter.
In the second game, Arizona put single runs on the board in the first
and sixth inning before ASU tied the game with a pair of runs later in the
sixth. The Wildcats bounced back in the seventh, scoring the game-winning
run before Evans came on to get the save.
Swan cracked her second triple of the night and later came around to
score.
Arizona plays host to California and Stanford Saturday and Sunday, with
both doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m.
