Monday, the UA Athletics Department will hold its annual C.A.T.S. Senior Awards Banquet at the Marriott University Park Hotel.
The dinner and ceremony, which begins at 6:00 p.m., will honor 93 senior student-athletes.
In addition, the highest awards bestowed upon UA athletes will be presented to the top male and female Wildcat of the year. The Ruby and Sapphire Awards recognize two student-athletes who have displayed excellence in their sport and in the classroom as well as service to the community.
Former Arizona basketball player Warren S. Rustand will be honored with the C.A.T.S. Silver Anniversary Award, which is given out each year to an athlete who graduated at least 25 years before and has since demonstrated outstanding work in his or her respective field as well as maintained support for the UA.
Rustand completed his bachelor of education degree in 1965 and went on to earn a masters in the same field in 1972. During his career at UA, he was Arizona's first Academic All-American as well as the ASUA President. After college, he was drafted by the San Francisco Warriors.
In 1974-75, as the first Arizonan to be named a White House Fellow, Rustand served as Appointments Secretary to the President of the United States.
He has stayed very involved in the UA, holding the presidency of the UA Foundation and serving as Chairman of the University Heart Center for nine years.
Members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board, which consists of at least one representative from each of the 18 sports, will also be recognized for their year of commitment.
The evening will be capped off with a video, highlighting the seniors' competitive efforts from throughout the year.
Briefly
This past weekend, the UA Club Ultimate Frisbee Team finished second up at the Sectional Tournament in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Fourteen players competed, helping qualify the team for the Regionals in Santa Cruz, Calif. on May 9 and 10. Approximately 22 teams from around the West Coast will participate in the tournament but only the top two make it to Nationals, which will be held in Minnesota at the end of the month.
