Baseball team's season fizzles out at Cal

It's wasn't supposed to end this way.

Not after starting the season with 16 straight wins. Not after building on that to have a 22-2 record two weeks into conference play.

But the season did end yesterday for the Arizona baseball team, defeated by last-place California 13-4 for the second time in a three game series to all but eliminate the Wildcats from any postseason contention.

The Wildcats may have been effectively eliminated on Saturday when they lost their 17th game in Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division play. Only once in school history had UA made it to NCAA Regionals with a 13-17 Six-Pac record.

"We were still vying hard for regionals," UA junior catcher Greg Clark said of the team's mood going into the game. "They just came out on top."

Yesterday's loss gave Arizona a final record of 12-18 in the Six-Pac, good enough for only fourth place, and 33-23 overall.

UA junior designated hitter Rob Shabansky, who was 3 for 4 on the day with a solo home run, said the Wildcats put everything they had into yesterday's game.

"We put more into it because today was a do-or-die situation, but it came out the opposite way," he said.

California (20-30 overall, 5-24 Six-Pac) erupted for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break open a 6-4 game.

UA sophomore starter Tony Milo took the loss to end his season at 8-6 after starting 7-0.

Ryan Atkinson (2-6) picked up the win for the Bears with seven innings of nine hit ball.

Both Clark and Shabansky agreed that pitching will be the key for the Wildcats to make it to regionals next year.

"The pitching has to be more consistent," Shabansky said. "They'll throw five good innings and then have two bad ones. They need to stay in the ballgame."

Clark added "we need to keep up the defense, too."

Looking back on the year, though, Shabansky said he had no regrets.

Shabansky said he could "find a million things (to remember). We were ranked No. 2, things were rolling, then a few guys got hurt and we hit the 11 game skid. I love all the guys, I wouldn't trade it for anything."

Cal student Michelle President contributed to this story.
