Golfer loses clubs, stereo to thief

The nation's No. 1-ranked collegiate men's golf player reported last week that someone broke into his car and took his stereo system - plus $1,200 worth of UA-owned golf clubs.

UA golfer Rory Sabbatini seemed nonchalant about the theft yesterday, saying "it was no big deal."

"It's not the set of irons that I use, so it was no big loss," he said.

Sabbatini said the clubs, which he had been carrying in his car between Intercollegiate Athletics events, were not insured, but he has not been asked to pay for them.

Sabbatini reported to police that he parked his 1996 Nissan Sentra in the Main Gate Garage, 815 E. Second St., at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and returned at 8:20 a.m. the next day to discover his car's passenger-side window busted.

Thieves had taken nine UA-owned Ping Zing irons valued at $800, plus a $400 Calloway driver.

Also missing were a Kenwood 10-inch sub-woofer speaker and Fosgate stereo amplifier valued at $1,100, a $450 Pioneer stereo/compact disc player and about 330 compact discs worth $2,500, according to university police reports.

Sabbatini said the break-in itself irked him more than losing the clubs or his stereo.

"It has nothing to do with the stereo or the clubs. It's just that somebody being real malicious like that," Sabbatini said. "It's real sickening.

"But I try to find the lighter side of it," he added. "At least they didn't damage the car, other than the window."

Men's golf coach Rick Larose could not be reached yesterday for comment about the pilfered clubs.
