Sidelines

The Wildcats had their perfect road record ended this weekend, failing to score a goal on the trip.

The Arizona women's soccer team returned to Tucson last night with a 2-2-1 record after playing to a 0-0 overtime tie at Sacramento State University yesterday and losing 2-0 to San Jose State on Friday in Sacramento, Calif.

The Wildcats outshot the Hornets 23-14, but could not find the back of the net. UA senior Melissa Kessler, who grew up in Sacramento, had a team-high six shots. Kessler only had eight shots during the entire 1996 season.

Freshman goalkeeper Inger Airheart was credited with her second collegiate shutout. Airheart had a tougher match against San Jose State.

San Jose evened its record at 2-2, in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Wildcat freshman Brooke McManus lead the team with four shots coming off the bench.

The Wildcats return home for a seven-game homestand starting Friday night at 7 against Texas at Murphey Stadium.

Briefly

The No. 2 women's golf team successfully defended its title yesterday at the Rolex Fall Preview beating No. 1 Arizona State by shots at the University Golf Course (Par-72, 6, 033 yards). UA led by five strokes going into the final round and shot an 11-over-par 299 yesterday to bring its three-day total to 25-over-par 889. ASU finished two shots back at 289, Tulsa was third at 895, Furman was fourth at 902 and Wake Forest finished in fifth with its 907.

Arizona's Marisa Baena , who shot a course record 69 in the first round and was second after two rounds, finished third overall with her 1-over-par 215. ASU freshman Grace Park took home the individual title with a record score of 6-under-par 210.

UA's Shannon Ingalls also finished in the Top 10 as she tied for ninth with her 6-over-par 222. Wildcat golfers Krissie Register tied for 19th (227), Heather Graff tied for 21st (228) and Jenna Daniels tied for 48th at 237.

By the Numbers

42:

Minutes, the last weather-delayed Wildcat football game was pushed back before Saturday night's 33-minute delay. The 42-minute delay on Sept. 11, 1993 against the University of Pacific was followed by a 16-13 Wildcat win. The 24-10 win over the Alabama-Birmingham Blazers was delayed because of lightning in the area.
