The Wildcat track and field teams are saving the best for last this season.
After coming off a mediocre indoor season, where only a few athletes
qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, things started to work out
once outdoor meets began.
Ranked third in the nation on the men's side and No. 12 on the women's
side, Arizona has moved into the role of one of the favorites at the upcoming
NCAA Outdoor Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., in June.
"We had a very good season so far, especially on the men's side,
but the big events are still to come. We eagerly await the NCAAs because
we have the amount of quality athletes to rank really high," UA head
coach Dave Murray said.
Arizona's strength in field events, particularly the javelin, pole vault,
discus and shot put, was mainly responsible for the huge improvement of
the overall team performance.
"I'm very happy that I didn't have any setbacks through injuries
this season, so I was able to practice really hard," freshman Esko
Mikkola said.
Mikkola stunned all his opponents by rocketing the javelin to a new school
record and automatic NCAA performance of 250-1 feet.
The shot put and discus tandem of seniors Chima Ugwu and Doug Reynolds
dominated most events with 1-2 sweeps.
On the women's side it was another year of enjoying Amy Skieresz's unlimited
potential over the distance races. She qualified automatically without any
problems in the 5,000 and 10,000-meters, where she will try to remain NCAA
champion.
Sophomore Carolyn Jackson has qualified provisionally for the NCAAs with
a lifetime best of 52.56 in the 400.
