Arizona Daily Wildcat June 10, 1998 Sun Screens
Arizona Summer Wildcat * - Miss it. You'll have more fun doing yard work. ** - See it. But only if there's absolutely nothing else to do. *** - Worth it. Take an afternoon away from the pool. **** - The Big Hit. So good, you'll want to see it twice.
"Six Days, Seven Nights"Touchstone Pictures June 12 This action-packed film promises surprises, tongue-in-cheek humor, and romance that'll keep you at the edge of your seat. Of course, no one can pull off charm and adventure as well as star Harrison Ford - that man still has it. ****
"Can't Hardly Wait"TriStar Pictures June 12 High school graduation is over and now it's time to party! This comedy, featuring Ethan Embry and Jennifer Love Hewitt, is a classic case of the he-loves-her-who-loves-him technique. This is a film with six teenagers and a geek named Korsmo in search of future goals. It definitely targets people younger than the college crowd. Pass. *
"Mulan"Walt Disney Pictures June 19 Walt Disney is coming out with its 36th full-length animated feature. This one is about the adventures of a young Chinese girl who joins the army disguised as a man in order to save her father's life. Starring Ming-Na Wen as the voice of Mulan and Eddie Murphy as the voice of Mushu, this story may have its moments - but it looks like the wait-till-video type. **
"Saving Private Ryan"July 24 Looks like Steven Spielberg is still surviving despite his losses at the Academy Awards this year, this time with a WWII drama starring Tom Hanks, Edward Burns and Matt Damon. What happened to the Spielberg we grew up with? Where are "Goonies," "Gremlins" and "Indiana Jones," the summer blockbusters we looked forward to? Another long, drawn-out drama that will allow Mr. Hanks to stroke his ego once again. **
"Armageddon"Touchstone Pictures July 1 Pop quiz: An asteroid the size of Texas is heading to Earth. What do you do? Get a group of the hottest celebrities together to save the movie - I mean, world. Starring Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thorton, Liv Tyler, Ben Affleck, Will Patton, Peter Stormare, Keith David and Steve Buscemi, director Michael Bay and producer Jerry Bruckheimer bring us another summer filled with action. ***
"Small Soldiers"July 10 The catch phrase "What if action figures took their jobs a little too seriously?" already peaks my curiosity. This looks like "Toy Story" gone to war, with toys that have attitude. The combination of live action and computer animation sounds intriguing and inventive enough to give it a look. ***
"The Mask Of Zorro"TriStar Pictures July 17 Step aside Leonardo, because Antonio Banderas will heat up the screen this summer as the legendary Zorro. This action adventure will be filled with romance, honor, love, tragedy, justice, triumph and a stallion named Tornado. Guys will be drooling over the sword fights, gals over Antonio - everyone gets what they want, and we're all happy. That's Hollywood, folks. ***
"Out of Sight"Universal Pictures June 26 George Clooney is back again, this time with Ving Rhames and Jennifer Lopez. Clooney is an escaped (and charming) bank robber, and Lopez is a Federal Marshall. Put two and two together and the plot becomes obvious - she falls for Clooney and is caught between deciding whether she should turn him in or not. See what love can do to you - what a shame. **
"Jane Austen's Mafia!"Touchstone Pictures July 24 This summer's most slapstick, unpredictable comedy is a pastiche on organized crime films. A mockery of "The Godfather," "Scarface" and other gangster films, this movie will surely pull off a laugh or two. Starring Jay Mohr, Lloyd Bridges and Christina Applegate, the story of the Cortino family unfolds. **
"BASEketball"Universal Pictures July 31 The creators of the animated and controversial sitcom "South Park," Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are back, but not as writers - they're among the stars of a strange film which incorporates baseball and basketball into one sport. One thing leads to another and this sport, "BASEketball," gets huge! Jenny McCarthy is in it - that alone should tell you something.... **
"Dance With Me"Columbia Pictures July 31 There is something about Latin dancing that stirs up the spirit of romance in all of us. "Dance With Me" is another instructor-student love affair film, starring Chayanne as the handsome Cuban dancer and Vanessa Williams as the instructor. Although it doesn't look as comical as "Shall We Dance," or as sophisticated as "Strictly Ballroom," it might have its moments. **
"Virus"Universal Pictures August 14 Talent gone to waste? Jamie Lee Curtis, William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland combine their strengths to eliminate this alien-virus thing. The screenplay was written by the guys who wrote "The Jackal" and "Species." That should give you some idea about how dense this movie will be. *
"Rush Hour"August 28 Whoever thought of putting Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker ("Money Talks") in an action comedy together? With Tucker's unoriginal humor, Chan's talents will be buried by bad jokes and dialogue. ** |
