This WeekWednesday, July 1Summerfest '98, the UA's art/music/lecture/anything-else-they-come-up-with summer series, is tuning up to present "The Creation," composed by Joseph Haydn, at Crowder Hall. The piece will be performed by the University-Summer Choir and the University Summer Orchestra. Prior to the 7:30 p.m. show Jay Rosenblatt, professor of musicology, will be giving a talk at 6:45 p.m. Call the Fine Arts Box Office at 621-1162 to verify the location of the talk and get your tickets for the performance. Prices are $10 general, $8 UA staff/faculty, and only $5 for students and senior citizens. Amorphous masses? My favorite! And, apparently, Gallagher Theatre has taking a liking to them too- "The Abyss" will be showing tonight through July 3 at 7:30 p.m. only. For a mere $2.50, you, too, can satisfy your desire to see friendly shapeshifting aliens. By the way, this is the director's cut. That means an extra 30 minutes of action-packed underwater fun.
Friday, July 3No classes today + all buildings closed = no excuses not to go out. It's Friday, by golly, and Skrappy's is kicking off the weekend with an album release show by the Weird Lovemakers. Two or even three other bands will be joining the boys tonight at 3710 N. Oracle Road. The show is all ages- contact Skrappy's at 408-9644 for ticket prices and show time. Spitshine those brogues- Club Congress is putting on a four band funk/ska show tonight featuring Dave's Big Deluxe, Skanic, Honeybeegroove, and Brown Whorenet. Doors fly open at 8:30 p.m. for all of you holding proper ID. Trade in your $5 for a night of skankin' and struttin'.
Sunday, July 5The tribute to Robert Mitchum continues at the Screening Room (127 E. Congress) tonight with a showing of "Night of the Hunter." Come see what bad things happen when you steal a lot of money and share a cell with a guy named Preacher. The matinee starts at 3 p.m., and the evening showing is at 7:30. Contact the box office at 622-2262 for ticket prices. Perez Prado meets Jorge Ben and argue over Carmen Miranda's fruit salad tonight at Club Congress' weekly Latin dance night, Havana. Doors open at 9 p.m. Ð arrive early for the first bout. It's free.
Monday, July 6Gallagher Theatre-it's a sci-fi buff's second home. Come visit tonight to catch the first showing of "The Day the Earth Stood Still," a classic film about alien robots invading Earth. Show times are 7:30 p.m. and 9:20 p.m. through Tuesday, and admission is the usual $2.50. Isn't it about time you saw a black and white film from 1951 on the big screen? |
