University police arrested a belligerent Tucson man on suspicion of drunk driving Friday evening after officers pulled him over for speeding on East Speedway Boulevard near North Forgeus Avenue.

An officer spotted a man "stagger" out of a campus-area convenience store at 11:30 p.m. and then get behind the wheel of a silver late-model Nissan pickup truck, police reports stated.

The man drove east on Speedway Boulevard, where officers paced his vehicle's speed at 56 mph in a 35 mph zone before stopping him at a Baskin Robbins ice cream store near Forgeus Avenue, reports stated.

As officers approached the vehicle, as Oscar Gamboa, 41, of the 2600 block of East Glenn Street, said "I'm drunk. I've been drinking, take me to jail now if you want," reports stated.

Gamboa then turned around and put his hands behind his back.

After his performance on sobriety tests, officers arrested Gamboa on suspicion of drunk driving, and placed him in the police cruiser, reports stated.

Gamboa then reportedly began yelling and kicking the plastic screen behind the drivers seat. When asked if he would perform an breathalyzer test, Gamboa told officers, "Fuck you. I ain't doing shit," reports stated.

Officers obtained a search warrant for a blood test and then took Gamboa to Kino Community Hospital, reports stated. They then took Gamboa to the Pima County Jail, where he was booked.


University police arrested a man on suspicion of criminal trespassing Sunday after witnesses said they him saw exposing himself and possibly masturbating in the Memorial Student Union, 1303 E. University Blvd.

An officer arrived at 9:42 a.m., when an employee told him that the man fitting descriptions provided by witnesses was watching television in Heritage Hall, police reports stated.

The man, who identified himself as Tony A. Richards, 38, of a general delivery address, told police he was only inside the Union to watch television, reports stated.

A check indicated that Richards had been warned on campus for criminal trespassing in September 1997. One of the witnesses told police he was walking down the stairs near Gallagher Theater when he saw Richards sitting on a step with his pants unzipped and his penis in plain view, reports stated.

Richards was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespassing charge and taken to the Pima County Jail.


University police chased a suspected motorcycle thief through a residential neighborhood Friday minutes after a student reported his bike stolen near the Gould-Simpson building, 1040 E. Fourth St.

The student reported his black and blue 1985 Yamaha XV700 stolen about 9:40 p.m., police reports stated.

An officer spotted a man at 9:52 p.m. riding a similar motorcycle and pulling out at a green light on East Sixth Street at North Tyndall Avenue, reports stated.

The man was riding with his headlight out, and accelerated when the officer began to follow him, reports stated.

The officer pursued the rider at speeds in excess of 55 mph through the neighborhood south of East Sixth Street, but was later told to discontinue the chase, reports stated. Tucson police and university police officers circulated the area, but found no suspects.


A university police officer arrested a man on suspicion of criminal trespassing Sunday, after finding him snoozing under a shady tree outside the Ina E. Gittings building, 1713 E. University Blvd.

The officer spotted him near the east side of the building, crashed out on top of a flattened cardboard box at 9:48 a.m., police reports stated.

The man, identified as Gilbert L. Matthews, 41, of a general delivery address, told the officer he was just resting, reports stated.

When asked if he had any identification, Matthews said, "I know. I know. I'm not supposed to be here," reports stated.

A check indicated Matthews had been warned for criminal trespassing in July, 1997, and he was arrested and taken to the Pima County Jail. He was later released by Pre-Trial Services.
