Police Beat

A male student was arrested on drunken driving charges Friday after university police spotted him speeding and swerving on East Sixth Street near North Fremont Avenue.

Marc R. Roos, 23, of the 300 block of North Warren Avenue, was cited on charges of DUI, speeding and failure to stop within a traffic lane.

According to reports, when police stopped Roos at 1:38 a.m. he wanted to know why the officer was bothering him. Police told him it was for speeding and he replied, " There was no one else on the road, so it was OK to speed."

Police then detected a strong odor of alcohol on Roos' breath.

He consented to a field sobriety test but said, "I'm not drunk, I'm the best qualified to tell," according to police reports.

Roos was then arrested and taken to UAPD headquarters where he refused to take a breath test.

"I won't do it. I don't believe in the laws," Roos reportedly told police.

Police obtained a search warrant and took him to Kino Community Hospital for a blood test.

He was transported home after the test was completed.

A 20-year-old man was arrested and taken to Pima County Jail Sunday after he refused to give university police any information except for his name and age.

Joseph Shane Madison, unknown address, was booked into Pima County Jail on charges of DUI, minor operating a motor vehicle with liquor in the body and possession of fireworks.

Police were driving westbound on East Sixth Street at 3:39 a.m. when Madison was heading south on North Euclid Avenue and ran a red light.

Madison told police he could not find his license, registration or insurance because he had just gotten back from Mexico.

According to reports, Madison was staggering and used the car roof for support when police asked him to get out for a field sobriety test.

During the subsequent arrest, police found 54 bottle rockets in the back seat of Madison's car.

Madison refused a breath test at UAPD.

An 11-year-old boy was injured shortly after the UA football game Saturday when his friend pushed him into the bushes outside Arizona Stadium, 540 N. Vine Ave.

According to reports, the two boys were "horsing around" at 10:53 p.m. when one of them fell into the bushes and suffered a deep cut on his left leg.

The boy was transported to St. Mary's Hospital via ambulance and his mother was advised of the incident.

A man reported $3,600 worth of band equipment was taken early Saturday after a party at Sigma Alpha Epsilon, 1509 E. Second St.

The man told university police he was hired to pick up the $2,500 drum kit and $1,100 guitar amplifier, but when he showed up about 2:45 a.m., the items were missing.

He told police the items had been rented from Soundwave Productions by SAE and the band playing at the party that night.

According to reports, none of the house members were able to provide possible suspect information.

A student love triangle apparently sparked one female student to crank call the "other woman" early Saturday morning at La Paz Residence Hall, 602. N.Highland Ave.

The student told university police she received eight to 10 phone calls from the angry female student between 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. where she reportedly called her several names including a "flat, slutty bitch."

The student told police the woman was upset about her friendship with a mutual male friend.

According to reports, the student only heard heavy breathing during the last two calls.

A female employee reported Friday that items missing from her office might have been thrown away by a disgruntled custodian.

The employee told university police that her metal lunch box, coffee mug and tea leaves were taken from underneath a desk during a four-day period last week.

She told police she had complained about the custodians not taking out all of the office's garbage.

She said the crews have been taking everything from the office since the complaint, even items they want, and suspects her belongings were thrown away.

Police Beat is compiled from official University of Arizona Police Department reports.
