By John Brown Police BeatAn 18-year-old student was injured Tuesday after crashing into an opened car door while riding his bicycle near Gila Residence Hall. The student was riding west at 12:30 p.m. in the 1000 Block of North Campus Drive when the driver of a vehicle that he was passing opened the door. The bicycle crashed with the door, which bent the front wheel and threw the student to the ground. He suffered abrasions on his left foot and arm, but refused to be taken to a hospital. A $280 mountain bike was stolen from the front of the Main Library on Sunday. The student told university police he locked the bike on the north side of the library, 1510 E. University Blvd. with a cable lock at 10:30 a.m. and when he returned at noon it was gone. A second student reported finding his $250 mountain bike missing at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday from outside La Paz Residence Hall, 602 N. Highland Ave. It had been secured with a chain lock. A counterfeit $20 bill was used to purchase items at a McKale Center snack bar Tuesday. An employee told university police that a customer purchased two items using the phony money at 1 p.m., then she gave the customer $17 in change. The employee told police that shortly after the customer left she realized the bill had a different feel to it and that it appeared to be counterfeit. Police took the bill and advised the concession supervisor to alert employees about the incident. A UA security van's tire was slashed while parked at UAPD headquarters early Wednesday. According to reports, the 1996 Chevrolet Astro van's left rear tire was intact shortly before midnight, but at 3 a.m. an officer returned to the vehicle compound at 1200 E. Lowell St. to find the tire's side wall had been cut. A student was arrested Wednesday after going to UAPD to pick up his lost wallet, in which university police had discovered a fake identification card. Michael B. Less, 18, of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity house, 1423 E. First St., was cited on charges of possession of a fictitious license and misrepresentation of age to obtain alcohol. According to reports, Less told university police he was 18, which was consistent with a California ID in the wallet. Police then asked him about the Nebraska license with his name on it that indicated he was born in 1975. Less told police he paid $40 to a friend of a friend for the fake card, but at first denied ever using it to buy alcohol, reports stated. Police commented on how good the quality of the ID was and Less finally admitted he had used it a couple of times, reports stated. Less also told police he had used it at fraternity parties to get his hand stamped so he could drink. He was cited and released at the scene. University police found 12 broken padlocks and several items missing from McKale Center locker rooms Monday. An employee reported his $40 wristwatch stolen and a second employee was missing his $60 Nike running shoes from their lockers at 1721 E. Enke Drive. Eleven of the padlocks had tool marks on the metal casing, reports stated. Police also found a screwdriver with a bent shaft in one of the opened lockers. According to reports, the door to the locker room was locked, but the walls do not reach the ceiling. Police found footprints on top of the lockers that suggest access was gained by climbing over the wall. A Tucson man was arrested Wednesday after university police found him sleeping in a UA-owned building north of campus. Police were conducting a check on the building at 1621 E. Helen St. about 10:30 p.m. when the officer looked through the window and saw, John K. Darvah, 43, of a general delivery address, sleeping on the floor. According to reports, the door was locked when the officer arrived at 4 p.m. when he made his first check of the house. However, Darvah told police he got into the house through the front door. He told police he had been sleeping there the past three nights, but knew it was illegal. Darvah was booked into Pima County Jail on a second degree trespassing charge.
