Icecats scrimmage ends up one-sided

The Arizona Icecats held a Blue-White Scrimmage yesterday prior to the Phoenix Coyotes-Calgary Flames NHL preseason game at the Tucson Convention Center.

Experience defeated size as the White team defeated the Blue, 8-3.

The White team had most of the Icecats' returning players, while the Blue team featured most of the newcomers, including many of the team's bigger defensemen.

The Blue team did not even score until 10:08 into the first period, and by then it was already 5-0 White.

Blue cut the deficit to 5-2 at the end of the first period, but that was as close as they got. White put the game away with three goals by three different players to start the second period.

"I thought we looked great," freshman right-wing Marc Harris said. Harris scored two goals for the White team.

"It was neat to get out and play in a serious venue," Icecat head coach Leo Golembiewski said.

Golembiewski noted that the team is still somewhat out of shape, and they did play sloppy at times.

"We did look good on the fast break, though," he said.

Icecat senior center Ben Ruston scored one of his three goals for the White team on a fast break. Ruston led his squad to victory with two assists in addition to his hat-trick.

"We schooled the Blue line," Ruston said. "I think I could have played a lot better, though."

After the scrimmage, Phoenix defeated Calgary, 5-1, in a game marred by multiple fights and penalties.

Both teams played without most of their key players, who sat out the contest to rest up, as the NHL has condensed its preseason this year in order to allow for time off so that NHL players can play in the Olympics.

Coyote center Cliff Ronning led the way with a goal and two assists.
