The national championship in basketball means more than pride for the University of Arizona.

The school stands to rake in up to $700,000 in royalties on estimated sales of $7 million worth of T-shirts, caps and other souvenirs celebrating its run through last season's NCAA Tournament, school officials say.

UA has received about $250,000 in royalties, said John Perrin, senior associate director of athletics. "We don't know for sure because all sales data is still being collected," Perrin said.

Mike Low, licensing administrator for UA, said that figure does not include the regular Wildcat merchandise sold.

"I hate to guess, but optimistically we could have a total of around $1 million," Low said.

UA gets 10 percent of every championship item sold, based on a wholesale price. After the overhead is paid, the athletic department receives 60 percent. The remaining 40 percent goes to the school.

Most of the royalties will be used to upgrade facilities. The $22 million annual athletic budget does not include these improvements, Perrin said.

By the Numbers

6:

Years, since the Arizona football team has beaten a Southern California based team on the road. The Wildcats have lost three straight to both UCLA and Southern Cal on the road. In 1990 the 7-4 Wildcats beat both teams on their home turf - 28-21 over UCLA at the Rose Bowl and 35-26 over the Trojans at the Coliseum. Arizona doesn't play USC this season.
