What's going on

Hey and howdy there kids.

Welcome to the new Ground Zero listings column.

Turn to this space to find out just what fun we think you should be having this weekend.

Tonight

On campus?

Take a look see at the Arizona Jazz Dance Faculty Concert featuring the music of the UA Studio Jazz Ensemble. It's right down the street and cheap. $7 for real people and $6 for students. Call the Fine Arts Box Office for tickets.

Also at The Rock, 136 N. Park Ave., at 9 p.m. two good time rock 'n' roll bands, The Refreshments and Pistoleros, hit the stage for all ages. If you didn't catch The Refreshments on the UA Mall awhile back, don't miss 'em this time. Tickets are $13 today at Dillard's or The Rock, itself.

Friday

If your looking for something groovy it's in town Friday.

First of all, we're talking giants of jazz.

Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter take over the Centennial Hall stage at 8 p.m. These guys are myths, legends, the whole bit. And then there was Rock It, after all. Anyhow, tickets range between $23 and $36 and are half-price for students. Pick them up at Dillard's or the Hall box office.

Also Friday, if you can get a ride, Santana and Rusted Root will be jamming down at the Pima County Fairgrounds. All the love you can stand, man. Tickets are $29 for reserved seats and $14 for festival. They go up to $32 and $17, respectively, the day of the show.

Call Dillard's for ticket information.

If you're into the local scene, the Shoebomb CD release party at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St., might be right up your alley. The shindig is brought to you by those ever-so-entertaining guys and gals at KFMA and also features Panik Over Trainwreck, all for a mere five-spot. Call 622-8848 for more info on the clambake.

Saturday

Those KFMA guys, Food Conspiracy Co-op and the Tucson Arts District team up to bring you seven hours of music you need to hear. And for a good cause. The price of admission to the show at the Bangcock Cab Company Restaurant, near Fifth Avenue and Ninth Street, is two cans of food and the event is supposed to raise 5,000 pounds of food. It features Cortex Bomb and eight other artists, so head on out. Call 620-6144 for information.

Also, this weekend is your last chance to catch "Always ... Patsy Cline" over at The Invisible Theater, 1400 N. First Ave. All shows start at 8 p.m. and tickets are $16 for Thursday and $18 for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Call 882-9721 for more information.

In other theater news, the Arizona Theatre Company kicks off season number 31 with "Blithe Spirit" by Noel Coward. Tickets range from $18.50 to $27.50 and you can call 622-2823 for more information. The deal goes down at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave.

Other stuff

Opening up this week in the Lionel Rombach Gallery at the UA Arts Complex Displaced Perspectives the work of students Emily Tellez and Mark Seely. If the work in Stilled Life: Cadaver Studies is any indication, this should be an exhibition worth taking in.

The gallery is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. and Sunday 1- 4 p.m.

Down in Bisbee this weekend, the annual Poetry Festival focuses on the 80th anniversary of the Bisbee Deportation, a nefarious moment in United States and Arizona labor history.
