Police Beat

University police sent four students to the UA diversion program Sunday after officers found what they suspected was marijuana at the Corleone Apartments, 1330 N. Park Ave.

Police arrived at one student's room about 9 p.m. after someone reported a marijuana smell.

Officers also whiffed what they believed was a marijuana odor wafting through the door cracks.

Three of the students told university police they had smoked the illegal drug, but the apartment's resident denied smoking. However, the resident told police he had supplied the substance that night.

Police confiscated about 13 grams of a "green leafy substance," 3 suspected joints, 2 pipes, rolling papers and some seeds.

The student told police he purchased the substances at a party, but could not remember the seller's name.

A 17-year-old university employee told police Monday that three masked, gun-wielding bandits stole his new bicycle just west of the Memorial Student Union, 1303 E. University Blvd.

The employee told university police he unlocked his chrome Kawasaki BMX bike about 10:30 p.m. and started walking north between the Student Union and the Engineering Building, 1127 E. North Campus Drive.

According to police reports, two men wearing black bandannas 'outlaw-style' over their faces approached and pulled out handguns. A third man in a red UA T-shirt reportedly came from behind and grabbed the bike's handle bar.

Reports stated the men pointed their guns at him and one of them said, "Give me your bike or we'll shoot."

Police said the employee believed he would be shot if he did not comply.

One of the men then got on the bike and headed toward North Mountain Avenue. The other two ran west, reports stated. The boy told police he walked home after the incident.

According to reports, he had bought the bike at Wal-Mart Friday for about $100.

A student reported Tuesday that $25 was stolen from her unlocked room at Coconino Residence Hall, 1003 N. Olive Road.

The student told university police $20 worth of quarters and a five dollar bill were taken Sept. 24 from her room between 6 and 10 p.m.

Police suggested the student lock her room when she and her roommate are not there.

Someone tried to steal a compact disc player Monday from a car parked in the lot south of Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall, 910 E. Fifth St.

A student told university police he parked his 1997 Toyota Corolla in lot #5072 at about 12:30 a.m. and returned at 3:15 p.m. to find the passenger window shattered, the stereo's face plate on the car floor, and several marks on the stereo deck.

Nothing was missing from the vehicle, police reports stated.

A student motorist who gave a bicyclist $130 after hitting him Tuesday told police she wanted her money back

However, she didn't know the man's name.

According to police reports, the student was leaving lot #4056 at East Speedway Boulevard and North Cherry Avenue about 3 p.m. when she hit the bicyclist, who was riding west on the sidewalk along Speedway.

The man had a few scrapes and scratches and the bike's handle bar was slightly bent, police reports stated.

She helped him care for his wounds and reportedly offered to write a check for the damages.

However, she could not understand the man's speech and had him write the check for her, reports stated.

The man then locked his bike near the lot and the woman drove him home to his apartment at East Broadway and North Euclid Avenue.

The student told police she believes it was a mistake for her to write the check and she should have had her insurance company take care of it.

She said she did not know exactly where the man lives.

Police Beat is compiled from official University of Arizona Police Department reports.
