Freshman Joey Caviar hands Belinda Lasky, Jewish Campus Service Corps Representative, his ticket to the Rosh Hashanah service at the Hillel Foundation. UA students were allowed to attend free of charge, but other Tucson residents paid $100 a ticket to attend.

At sundown on Wednesday, the Jewish year 5758 began - and across campus and around the world, Jews celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Some Jewish UA students passed the three-day holiday with services, food and friends.

"It's a festive event within the congregation," said creative writing junior William Guth, who spent part of the holiday at services through the Hillel Foundation.

"The service is all about thanking God for leading us through the bad times in the past," he added.

Rosh Hashanah falls at different times each Gregorian calendar year, depending how the Jewish calendar falls, said Belinda Lasky, a representative for the Jewish Campus Service Corps.

The holiday, which began Wednesday night, ends today at sundown.

The Hillel Foundation had two services for students and community members Wednesday: a Conservative Service at Hillel and a Reform Service in the Arizona Senior Ballroom in the Memorial Student Union.

The new year celebration at Hillel included an opening prayer followed by a service.

"To me, Rosh Hashanah is a time for me to look back on the previous year and ask God's forgiveness for those I've hurt," said Jake Schwartz, an undeclared freshman who attended Wednesday's service.
