By John Brown Arizona Summer Wildcat August 27, 1997 Police BeatA UA student reported Friday that while he was out of the country someone used his credit card, which he never received, to make long distance phone calls.The student told university police he was gone all summer and when he returned Aug. 18, he had a $206.48 credit card bill. The calls were made from the Bursar's Office, 1401 E. University Blvd., between July 14 and 16. He said he had applied for the card on the UA Mall last year, but had never received it. The credit card company suspended the charges and canceled the card.
A 22-year-old Tucson man caught urinating Friday behind 7-Eleven, 1750 E. Speedway Blvd., was able to elude university police Ü but only temporarily Ü since he dropped his wallet as he tried to run away. A university bike patrol officer approached the man while he was urinating at 7:15 p.m. The man told university police he was not carrying any identification. He quickly ripped off his sandals and ran north across Speedway Boulevard, through the McDonald's parking lot, then west of Babcock Residence Hall, 1717 E. Speedway Blvd. The officer was unable to chase the man because of heavy traffic but noticed the man had dropped his black vinyl card holder. A check on the man's ID revealed his license was suspended. He had a warrant for his arrest for failure to appear in court on a minor in possession of alcohol charge.
A Residence Life maintenance employee reported Friday the theft of a 25- inch television from Room L105 at La Paz Residence Hall, 602 N. Highland Ave. The TV, which has "RLM" and "La Paz" spray painted on it, was taken between 4 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday.
Saturday, university police helped an 18-year-old student put out a fire in his burning 1973 Volkswagen at North Park Avenue and East Second Street. Police were in the area at 7:53 p.m. when they saw that the vehicle's interior was on fire. Two officers used their patrol car fire extinguishers to put out the blaze. The back seat was still smoking when Tucson Fire Department arrived. TFD determined the cause of the fire was the battery, which was the wrong size and should have been installed under the backseat instead of in the front of the vehicle. The amount of damage to the vehicle's interior was unknown.
Saturday, a University Medical Center employee reported someone had attempted to steal her vehicle, which was parked near East Mabel Street and North Martin Avenue, by breaking the driver's side window and steering column. The employee told university police she parked her 1990 Jeep Cherokee in lot 2031 at 4 p.m. Friday and returned Saturday about 10:40 p.m. to find the vehicle damaged. University police learned that the Tucson Police Department was investigating a similar GMC truck theft at Plaza Hotel, 1900 E. Speedway Blvd.
A Tucson man was arrested Monday after university police found him snooping around the bike racks at the Student Recreation Center, 1400 E. Sixth St., with bolt cutters, vice grips and a pocket knife. Police responded at 8:36 p.m. after Rec Center employees reported seeing Edward Roads, 34, of the 1100 block of East Ninth Street, hanging around the racks and hiding something under his T-shirt, which he wasn't wearing. When Roads saw police, he bent down behind the wall, put on his shirt, and started walking north. Roads told the first officer his name was Edward Roads. After running a check they found that he was using an alias and there was a warrant for his arrest. A second officer searched the area behind the wall where he found a removed bike tire, yellow metal cutters, and vice grips. Roads then said: "I took the tire. I admit it. I know I shouldn't have." However he denied the tools were his. Roads was arrested on charges of theft, giving false information to a police officer, and a warrant for failure to appear on a shoplifting charge. He was booked in Pima County Jail in lieu of a $192 bond.
Saturday, a student reported hearing a loud crash from the northeast side of the Main Gate Garage, 815 E. Second St. University police arrived at 11:15 p.m to find a smashed 25-inch TV on the ground near the garage. The student said he did not see who dropped the television.
