Space exploration leading to colonization

I would like to respond to Raphael Hon's letter, "Feed the hungry, not NASA". We are going to have to leave the planet eventually - because of overpopulation, or pollution, or depletion of resources. This is clearly not going to happen next week, or next year, or possibly even next decade. But it is something that we will need to do ­ and if we don't start laying the foundation for it now, we won't be able to leave when we truly need to.
