Skieresz wins tenth in a row

For the third straight year, UA junior Amy Skieresz captured the individual title at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula, Mont..

Skieresz was dominant on the 6,000-meter course with a time of 20:32.1. Her nearest competitor, Claire Eichner-Taylor of the Asics team, was 26 seconds back. Skieresz's nearest collegiate opponent, BYU's Courtney Pugmire, was 45.8 seconds behind.

Skieresz has not lost a meet since the 1995 NCAA Championships, when she came in second. The victory was her 10th in a row.

Overall, both the men's and women's cross country teams came in fourth this weekend.

The women finished with a team score of 129, while the men finished with 101.

Leading the way for the men once again was junior transfer Abdi Abdirahman. He came in seventh with a time of 24 minutes, 58.6 seconds after having come in first at the Wildcats' previous two meets.

Junior Jeff McLarty came in 18th at 25:19.7, the only other men's runner to finish in the top 20.

The only other runner on the women's team to come in the top 10 was senior Virginia Camacho (ninth, 21:51.8).

The Wildcats will compete at the Murray Keatinge Invitational at Orono, Maine, this Saturday, their last meet before the Pacific-10 Championships on Nov. 1.

By the Numbers

96:

Yards, Trung Canidate gained on the longest play from scrimmage in Arizona football history. At the 6:55 mark in the second quarter, Canidate busted up the middle, broke several tackles on his way to a touchdown on the first play of the series. After having a 76-yard run nullified because of a penalty, Canidate made school history. Thirty-seven years ago, on Nov. 12, 1960, Bobby Thompson ran 88 yards for a touchdown in a 28-14 win over the University of Texas-El Paso. Canidate's score was the second-longest ever given up by San Diego State.
