Amy Skieresz

For the diehard Wildcat fan and even the occasional reader, the Wildcat sports staff compiled a behind the scenes look at goings on with Arizona sports. This is the first edition of a weekly column to appear Tuesdays. Send any questions, comments or tips to: mailto:kclerici@u.arizona.edu.

It's lonely at the top. UA cross country head coach Dave Murray said junior Amy Skieresz has been complaining of late. She feels frustrated because no one is willing to compete with her. "Nobody even made an attempt to keep up with her," Murray said of la st weekend's Mountain West Classic in Missoula, Mont. Skieresz described it to Murray as "I was out there, halfway through the race, and no one else was in sight." Maybe there is such a thing as being too good...

Last season's starting goalkeeper for the Arizona soccer team, junior Christa Conway, has it tough at practice this season, that is when she's there. Conway quit the team after last season because she didn't want to make the commitment to soccer any longe r. However, she was asked by the coaches to return to the team as the back-up goalkeeper to freshman Inger Airheart. Conway attends practice once a week and goes on road trips - getting free food and lodging along the way...

Senior wide receiver Jeremy McDaniel is redshirting this season because of a hamstring injury that was supposedly too painful to run pass routes on. However, one would never know it by the way he has been schooling people in pick-up basketball games. Desp ite being unable to run pass routes, McDaniel can be seen running, shooting, and jumping for hours at the Student Rec Center...

The UA athletic department has all but finalized a contract with Nike. The deal would provide Nike sponsorship for almost every Division I sport at the University. Teams are already sporting Nike furnished jerseys and athletic gear...

Leon Callen, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament in April's spring drills, was released by his doctors to practice with the football team last week. He is already playing in full pads and running some pass routes. Callen was the projected starting tai lback before the injury. But he's redshirting because there is no reason to rush things with the emergence of Trung Canidate. In an interview with the Wildcat, Callen said that he has serious plans on running and competing for the track team this spring. He plans on being a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team and possibly the 100m dash. Callen ran a 10.5 in the 100m in high school, where he was a Parade All-American at De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif...

Some fans like to scream "Put Hanson in" or "Hanson, Hanson" for the 6-foot-8 true freshman quarterback Peter Hanson. Unfortunately, those with hopes that the kid will get some playing time are just expelling hot air. Neither Hanson nor UA head coach Dick Tomey have any plans of getting the monster child on the field. He is redshirting, and says, "Me and the field are not going to be seeing each other much this season." He does want to thank his fan club however, and sees no reason why it should stop...

One person benefiting from former UA associate athletic director of media relations Butch Henry's decision to relocate to Florida International is Stephen Kozachik. The director of facilities and capital operations has moved into Henry's vacated space. Wi th athletic director Jim Livengood deciding not to replace Henry for now, Kozachik has found himself quite a cozy little spot.
