Police Beat

A student reported Tuesday that she has received weird e-mail messages during the past few weeks.

The student had called university police after receiving two prank phone calls.

According to police reports, the messages have accused the student of "pirating software" and running a porn service from her computer.

The student told police she received an e-mail message Oct. 1 that was accompanied by a manipulated picture of a naked woman with her head on the body.

The message was sent to several e-mail addresses and it opened with, "I'm a fat, lonely girl" and gave the student's name and phone number for interested parties to contact her, reports stated.

The message ended with, "I'm a sophomore, so I'm legal in all states baby," reports stated.

The e-mail came from an America Online Internet address, reports stated.

The student told police she was informed by the Internet service that the original e-mail address was invalid.

In another incident, the student told university police, a man called her at 1 a.m. Tuesday and said, "What's your favorite scary movie?" imitating the movie "Scream."

The man called back about five minutes later but the student was unable to make out what he said.

The student told police she does not believe the incidents are related.

Police are investigating the incidents.

A male student reported Tuesday that an ex-friend has been trying to taunt him into fighting.

The student told university police the man came to his off campus apartment about 11 p.m. Monday and tried to lure him outside for a fight.

According to police reports, the student talked to the man through the window screen, but would not come out of his apartment.

The student told police the man eventually gave up and left, but the two had another run-in about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Modern Languages, 1423 E. University Blvd.

According to reports, the man again tried to start a fight , but when the student ignored the man, he allegedly pushed the student from behind.

The student left the building without retaliating, reports stated.

The student told police he does not know what may have provoked the incidents.

A $3,000 stereo speaker box was taken Tuesday from a vehicle parked just north of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority house, 1435 E. Second St..

A student told university police she parked her 1995 Ford Bronco about 3 p.m. Monday and returned about 4 p.m. the next day to find the front left vent window broken and the boxed speakers gone.

Police took photographs of the damage.

A student reported her wallet was taken Friday from an open cubicle at the UA Associated Students Bookstore, 1209 E. University Blvd.

The student told university police that she started removing items from her back pack about 9:30 a.m. and placing them on the cubicle shelf next to the pay lockers.

According to police reports, when the student walked away, she may have left her wallet on the shelf.

She returned about 15 minutes later and it was missing.

A student reported Monday that $20 was taken from her unlocked room at Coconino Residence Hall , 1003 N. Olive Drive.

She told police it was the third time something of hers had been stolen in two weeks.

According to police reports, the student wrapped $20 worth of quarters in a towel and put them in a drawer Sept. 29 and found the money missing Monday.

She also told police her bike had just been stolen and two weeks ago, money had been taken from her unlocked room.

The last time money was stolen, the room was unoccupied and unlocked for about two hours while she was next door, reports stated.

The stolen handgun university police recovered during a traffic stop Monday apparently had traveled across the country before ending up in Tucson.

According to police reports, the 9 mm semi-automatic pistol had been issued to an Army soldier in Alabama.

The man who claimed ownership of the pistol told police his brother-in-law purchased the weapon at a Sierra Vista gun shop.

According to reports, gun shop employees told police that a Fort Huachuca soldier had sold it to the store in March of 1996.

A check revealed the gun had been issued to the soldier while he was stationed in Alabama.

According to reports, the Pima County Sheriff's Office reported the soldier was involved in a 1995 driving incident on Interstate 10. In that incident, reports stated, the soldier was a passenger in a car when a handgun was flashed at other drivers.

The handgun has not yet been returned to the current owner.
