What to do and where to do it
Thursday, Oct. 9
Hey, you're in college. You're expected to own the trappings of education,
like books. For a cheap shortcut to an impressive bibliographic collection,
check out the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society Book Sale,
benefiting the Arizona State Museum Library. There will be books galore,
all deeply cheap (like under two bucks) displayed for your perusal and purchase
from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Even if you don't need 'em for yourself, call
this a head start on your holiday shopping.
A lil' ol' band called Bargain Town plays tonight at the Airport
Lounge (located in the basement of the Plaza Pub, 20 E. Pennington St.).
Very little is known about Bargain Town except that frontman Chris Morrison
draws amusing little caricatures of himself on his press releases and may
have taken a poetry class with the Wildcat's own Calendar Girl.
Friday, Oct. 10
If Womb rocked your world at Doublewide Showroom last night, catch
them again as they rev up the Bancock Cab Company, 411 N. Fifth Ave., as
part of the Diva de Tucson celebration of women in music. Also featured
are Milkseed, Annie Hawkins Band and Jensing. Show starts at 8:30 p.m.;
call 795-5476 for details.
Snazzy suits, shiny horns and faboo glittery bandstands: it must be Hipster
Daddy-O and the Hand Grenades. Come shimmy and swing with these hep
cats at the Third Stone, 500 N. Fourth Ave. Cover will generally fall into
the $3 to $5 range, leaving you with enough spare change for that scene-completing
martini.
Saturday, Oct. 11
Tango: it's not just for Gomez and Morticia anymore. Tango x 2
swirls into Centennial Hall for two performances, tonight at 8 and Sunday
at 7:30 p.m. Eight pairs of dancers will perform what the Boston Globe called
"the most erotically charged dance performance you'll ever see."
The first event in the UA Presents Arte Latino Americano series, tickets
for Tango x 2 run from $21 to $33.
OK, anime heads: The Tucson Animation Screening Society is presenting
a whole day of Japanese animation; that means all the blue, swoopy hairdos
and buxom, chirpy girls one could ask for. The screening happens from 1
until 9:00 p.m. at the Harvill auditorium (yeah the big one at the bottom
of the pit) and admission is free.
Sunday, Oct. 12
When all else fails, there's always the Gallagher. "Swingers"
plays tonight at 7:30 and 9:30 at the Gallagher Theatre. Two-fifty as always,
and afterwards you can gather together to drink highly caffeinated beverages
and talk about big things. Here's a topic: Has the idea of American art
degenerated into a tool of our commercialized capitalistic culture or does
it still have the ability to discover and defend truth and beauty in the
human soul? Explain your answer; give examples.
