Get out your parka, but keep your sandals handy

Students who donned jeans and sweatshirts for the weekend's sudden temperature dip may have to break out their shorts and sandals later this week, according to a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Yesterday's high of 67 degrees shattered the record for the lowest high temperature ever recorded for the date. The previous record was 69 degrees on Oct. 12, 1947.

Temperatures dipped to 47 degrees Saturday night and were expected to drop even lower, to the mid-40s last night.

The cool weather is a result of a low pressure trough that moved in from the Gulf of Alaska, NWS meteorologist Richard Okulski explained.

"We had cold air move in behind it, and that cold air remained Sunday," Okulski said.

Sunday's mercury officially topped out at 67, well below normal for this time of year, Okulski added.

He forecasted the weekend's cooler air will be pushed out today and temperatures will return to normal, with temperatures expected in the upper 70s today.

As this warming trend continues, temperatures may climb to above normal Tuesday through Thursday, Okulski added. Highs are expected in the upper 80s and lows will be in the 50s.

Such fluctuations in temperature are actually normal for this time of year, Okulski added.

"We start getting these systems this time of year," Okulski said.

Fluctuations become more frequent in November, he added.

Retailing and consumer studies senior Jennifer Ozark said she dislikes these fluctuations and hopes warm weather will stick around for a while longer

"It's October. Why doesn't the weather just decide already?" Ozark asked.
