Rugby sweeps field at Reno Invitational

Arizona's men club rugby team swept a six team field to win its first tournament of the season Saturday.

The team won the Reno Invitational Tournament in Reno, Nev., by beating Humboldt State and Chico State in the double elimination tournament.

In the first round, Arizona defeated Humboldt State on drop kicks, a system similar to penalty kicks in soccer, when the game finished tied at 17.

The Wildcats beat Chico State in the semifinals, 10-7.

UA's Al Lakomskis, Chris Kroon, Mark Sanchez, Greg Lim and Jason Arcaro, all scored in the final, beating Chico State again, 31-7.

"It was a good and bad weekend," Lakomskis said. "We didn't play as well as we could have, but we still beat two good teams."

UA tennis player moves on in Austin

Men's tennis player Roland Kupka, a UA senior, advanced today to the fourth round of pre-qualifying at the All-American Championships in Austin, Tex.

Kupka defeated Adrian Madzialic of Tennessee Tech, 6-2, 6-3 to make it out of the third round.

Earlier in the day Kupka beat Grant Huddin of Wichita State, 9-7.

The tournament is using a two-set system instead of the standard three-set to make up for time lost during Saturday's rain delay.

Kupka's next foe is Vince Allegre of UCLA.

The only other UA player at the tournament, junior Michel Stopa, lost in the first round to Matt Snyder of Illinois, 8-4.

Men's golf team out in front

The UA men's golf team is in the lead after one day of play at the Taylor Made Red River Classic in Dallas.

The 5th-ranked Wildcats shot a 3-over-par 579, two shots ahead of second place Houston.

UA's Andy Barnes is in a five-way tie for second after shooting a 2-under-par 142. He currently trails Oklahoma's Hunter Hass by three shots.

Rory Sabbatini also finished in the top 10 with an even-par 144. Other Wildcats include Tim Barnes (24th, 147), Derek Gillespie (30th, 148) and Scott Moore (30th, 148). The tournament ends tomorrow.
