What's Going On in the Tucson Community This Weekend

Tonight

Tucson is nothing if not multicultural. Case in point, the kickoff of the Makoché Tour, featuring three artists from the North Dakota recording label: American Indian traditional flute player Kevin Locke, powwow dancer and flute player Andrew Vasquez and music ethnologist and flute player Gary Stoustsos. And if that weren't enough, helping to fill up the Leo Rich Theater stage will be the Native American a capella group Ulali and more musicians and dancers than you could shake a flute at. The show begins at 8 p.m.; the Leo Rich Theater is located in the Tucson Convention Center complex at 260 S. Church Ave. The $18 tickets are available through Hear's Music, Antigone Books or Charge by Phone (520-881-3947).

Saturday, Oct. 18

While there is often a gaping chasm between art and practicality, architects narrow that gap considerably. Doug MacNeil, a former UA professor of architecture, drew when his creativity "overflowed" his technical constraints. See his drawings at " . . . for the love of DRAWING," a show hosted by his son Gannon MacNeil. Tonight's opening reception is from 7 to 10 p.m. at Meliora Architectural Gallery, 178 E. Broadway Blvd.

When your own chanting stops being effective, it's time to turn to professionals. A cappella group Anonymous 4 performs the ecstatic chants of Hildegard von Bingen at St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church (River Road and Campbell Avenue) at 8 tonight and 7:30 tomorrow night. As part of the UApresents Sites and Soundings concert series, tickets for this show are $25 or half-price with student identification. They are available at the Centennial Hall Box Office.

Sunday, Oct. 19

Since it is Family Weekend, you have probably realized by now that you'll always be your parents' child. So you might as well indulge yourself. The Live Theatre Workshop presents the Sunday Afternoon Children's Theatre today at 1 p.m. at 5317 E. Speedway Blvd. Adapted from Frank Stockton's short story, "The Griffin and the Minor Cannon," "The Last Griffin" is written and directed by Elizabeth Seddon Gooden, the Live Theatre Workshop's Director of Education. Admission is $5 and tickets are available at the door or by calling 327-4242.
