Homemaker Barbie celebrates housewives

Editor:

This letter is in response to Erin Kirsten Stein's Thursday commentary about Barbie. It was terribly witty and a pleasure to read. However, its ostensible theme concerns me somewhat. In brief she seemed to say, "It is most grievous and unfortunate that Mattel has created a homemaker Barbie. It is a dread digression to those primeval 1950's, etc."

I applaud her esteem for professional women, and am heartened by the success of any person; her attitude about women who do not choose a professional career however is inappropriate. There is nothing that anyone of any gender can do that is more important or that has a more positively profound impression on society at large than to raise considerate, productive, and responsible citizens. Those women with both the depth of understanding to realize this and the circumstances to devote themselves fully to this endeavor should be revered - and Mattel's salute to them ought to be heartily commended.
