Party stopped after neighbors complain

University police revealed yesterday they shut down a UA-sponsored dance on the Mall Friday after three complaints from residents of neighborhoods east of campus.

The University of Arizona Police Department received a complaint of loud noise, coming from near the Memorial Student Union, just after 9 p.m., according to police reports. Police responded and told the event's organizer, Jason Hand, mechanical engineering junior, to turn the music down.

A few minutes later, a near campus resident called police complaining about the volume of the music.

An officer went to the intersection of North Olsen Avenue and East Third Street, but could not hear any music. He did not do anything about the complaint.

A third call came in at 10:45 p.m. from a neighborhood east of North Campbell Avenue.

The officer went to North Plumer Avenue and East Third Street where he could hear the music. According to reports, he returned to the Mall and ordered the music to shut off.

Organizers of the party and members of the security team told the Arizona Daily Wildcat Monday they went to Campbell Avenue to monitor the noise at about 9:30 p.m. and could not hear anything. They also said they asked area residents if they could hear the music, but the residents said they could not.
