University police K-9 officer "Darro" assisted MANTIS (Metro Agency Narcotic Task Intervention Squadron) drug agents at their headquarters in a seizure of nearly 12 pounds of marijuana Monday.

Agents had recovered a medium sized cardboard box believed to contain contraband that was being sent through the mail. "Darro" alerted officers to the package, prompting agents to request a search warrant.

Inside the box, agents found 11.75 pounds of marijuana packaged in a silicon- sealed Tupperware container wrapped with scented newspaper, saran wrap, foil and then a trash bag.


A 22-year-old student reported that her backpack, which was at her feet, was stolen while she worked on a computer at the Main Library, 1510 E. University Blvd.

The student told university police she sat down at a computer on the second floor at 11 a.m. and put her Greatland backpack on the floor next to her feet.

When she finished typing at 11:15 a.m., she realized it was gone. The pack contained $15 worth of textbooks and a wallet, which contained several credit cards and her drivers license. The student told police she did not notice any suspicious individuals in the area during the time of the theft.


Students have reported 21 bicycle thefts since Aug. 18, including five this week, from campus-area locations. Three mountain bikes were taken from Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall, 910 E. Fifth St. A $109 bike frame and rear tire were swiped between 6 and 9 p.m. Monday by removing the quick release front tire. A second bike was taken about 6 p.m. Monday and another at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The theft of a $250 Trek mountain bike occurred between 6 p.m. Tuesday and noon Wednesday.

A student reported Tuesday his friend's $1,100 KHS mountain bike ,which he had borrowed, was stolen between 9:15 and 10:15 a.m. from the northwest side of Old Main, 1200 E. University Blvd. The $20 cable lock was also missing.

A three-day-old, $250 mountain bike was taken Wednesday from the south side of the Kuiper Space Sciences Building, 1629 E. University Blvd., between 3 and 3:30 p.m.


A 23-year-old student reported Wednesday his Zone 1 parking permit was taken from his open Jeep Wrangler while parked at North Fremont Avenue and East Seventh Street.

The student told university police he parked in lot 7103 at 1 p.m. with the permit hanging on the driver's sun visor and when he came back at 4:45 p.m. it was gone. No other items were reported missing.

He said when he purchased the permit he had requested a sticker and not a hanging-style permit.


A female student reported Wednesday someone had hit her vehicle while it was parked on East Fifth Street across from Coronado Residence Hall, 822 E. Fifth St.

University police reported the student's 1991 Chevrolet Caprice suffered damage in the rear of the vehicle on the driver's side. Scratches, dents and white paint were visible on the car. No evidence was recovered.


A black bi-fold wallet was found Wednesday at an unknown location. It belongs to a 19-year-old man and contained $4, an Arizona driver's license and other items. University police attempted to contact him, but could not because the man's phone number was unlisted.


University police have two purses in found property. One is a small black purse found Tuesday at 1145 E. Fourth St. It contained numerous cosmetics. The second purse was turned in by a custodial employee and was found at an unknown location. Police attempted to contact the person with the identification in the purse, but the woman had an unlisted phone number.
