Board approves $8 million for Main Library

The Arizona Board of Regents approved a $9 million Main Library expansion project Friday after criticizing the UA for neglecting to mention it earlier.

A 7-2 vote gave initial approval to the proposition.

"I think the plan was a good idea," said student Regent John Platt. "The reason I voted against it is because it should have been presented with the IIF."

The project will accommodate the addition of Congressional archives and the upcoming construction of the Integrated Instructional Facility.

Of the total cost, $2 million will come from federal funds and the remaining $7 million from academic bonds.

Platt said the board may have reconsidered approving tens of millions in new UA projects at the August meeting had they known an additional $7 million would be tacked on.

"This vote shows we won't stand for this," said Platt who voted against the plan along with Regent Don Ulrich.
