University police arrested a Tucson man Friday after three male students saw him with bolt cutters near the bike racks outside Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall, 910 E. Fifth St.

Richard B. Gonzales, 41, of the 1000 block of West St. Mary's Road, was arrested about 3:15 p.m. on theft and possession of drug paraphernalia charges, police reports stated.

Three male students told officers they saw Gonzales near the rack carrying the bolt cutters in his backpack, reports stated.

Gonzales reportedly left the area and went south.

Officers caught up with Gonzales, who was still carrying the backpack, near North Seventh Avenue and East Tyndall Avenue, working on the front tire of a mountain bike with a pair of pliers.

According to reports, he denied the backpack was his and told officers someone else must have left it there.

Gonzales initially told officers his name was Richard Lopez, reports stated.

He then told officers his real name and said he must have been thinking of a friend whose last name was Lopez, according to reports.

Gonzales told officers he had a syringe in his pocket for a heroin and cocaine habit, reports stated.

He reportedly told officers he had stolen about three bicycles from the university area and sold them to people on the street for between $30 and $40 to pay for the drugs.

Police took Gonzales to Pima County Jail and he was later released by Pre-Trial Services.


University police arrested a Tucson man for drunken driving about 3:45 a.m. Friday.

Michael S. Gibbs, 19, of the 1600 block of West Ajo Way, was charged with drunken driving and other related charges after police saw him speeding west on East Speedway Boulevard, police reports stated.

Officers reportedly saw Gibbs' 1984 Jeep Cherokee make a turn south on to North Second Avenue that almost flipped the car. They began to follow him until he stopped in an alley near South Bean Avenue.

Gibbs told officers he tried to evade them because he was "scared and ain't got insurance," reports stated.

Officers reportedly found two full cans of Busch beer and a full bottle of Goldrush liquor under the driver's seat.

Gibbs was taken to Pima Country Jail, where an Intoxilyzer test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .118. The legal limit is .10.

According to reports Gibbs was charged with reckless driving, expired registration, no mandatory insurance and driving without headlights in addition to the alcohol charges.

Gibbs was released by Pre-Trial Services.


University police arrested two Tucson boys on liquor charges Friday night after security officers at a campus concert saw them hitting other people as they were dancing.

Officers working at Centennial Hall, 1020 E. University Blvd., warned the two boys, ages 16 and 17 years old respectively, and later saw them hitting other concert patrons again, police reports stated.

The officers confiscated a bottle of St. Ide's Special Brew in one boy's pocket and another bottle in the other's hand, police reports stated.

The boys reportedly told officers the bottles were not theirs.

Both boys were charged with minor possessing alcohol and released to their parents at the scene.


University police arrested an 18-year-old student on alcohol charges Thursday after someone alerted police to minors drinking in an apartment.

Brian Frain, of the 1300 block of North Park Avenue was arrested in a room at Corleone Apartments, 1330 N. Park Ave., after officers got a complaint of 10-15 minors drinking in the area, police reports stated.

Officers reportedly saw a garbage can full of empty beer cans outside the apartment and asked the occupants who had been drinking.

Frain told officers he was drinking and was under 21, reports stated. He reportedly told officers he did not know if anyone else was drinking.

Frain was cited for minor possessing alcohol and released at the scene.


A male student called university police Friday after finding his Diamond Back BMX bicycle missing.

The student told officers he locked his bike with a chain outside the Education building, 1430 E. Second St., about 8:30 a.m. Thursday and when he came back at 3:30 p.m. that day, it was gone.

The bike was valued at $70.
