Sidelines

Depending on the point of view, it might be a good thing that Sports Illustrated picked Duke No. 1 and Arizona No. 2 in its college basketball preview issue.

It's a good thing if you believe in the SI cover jinx that has befallen every projected number one except UCLA in 1994-95.

The magazine, which hits newsstands on Monday, has a cover photo of Duke's Steve Wojiechowski and a few of the "Cameron Crazies," the students who paint themselves in Duke blue and white and run around Cameron Indoor Arena in Durham, N.C.

Arizona, which is the top-ranked team in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, may be ranked second, but SI acknowledges the Wildcats' title hopes.

"How come nobody thinks the Wildcats can repeat," states the article's headline.

The issue also features a story on UA senior guard Miles Simon. It details his trying 1996-97 season, including his academic problems, a bout with pneumonia and an automobile accident.

Briefly

The Arizona swimming teams open Pacific 10 Conference competition today against USC at 2 p.m. at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The meet also features some members of the U.S. National Team.

Olympic medalists Gary Hall Jr., Amy Van Dyken, and Brad Bridgewater along with 1997 U.S. Swimmer of the Year and former Wildcat Chad Carvin will also compete. The first 100 fans will receive a free autographed poster signed by many of these U.S. swimmers, as well as returning UA national champions, Trina Jackson and Ryk Neethling.

Tomorrow, the Arizona women host UCLA and Florida in a double meet beginning at 1 p.m. at Hillenbrand.

By the Numbers

Upper 30's:

Predicted temperature at the 8 p.m. kickoff of tomorrow night's football game by the national weather service. There is a 40 percent chance of measurable rain tomorrow afternoon but by evening it should be mostly clear. For good reason, considering the last time Arizona and California played, the game lasted over four hours and went to quadruple overtime.
