By John Brown Arizona Daily Wildcat September 2, 1997 Police warn buyers of stereo speaker scamThe University of Arizona Police Department and local law enforcement agencies are warning the public about a stereo speaker selling scam."We are concerned about the number of calls we have received regarding individuals selling stereo speakers," said UAPD Sgt. Sal Celi. Authorities are investigating the scam that involves selling cheap speakers as high quality equipment to unsuspecting customers. The scamers claim to have accreditation with stereo companies, but most likely do not, Celi said. Several students have reported being approached on campus and offered a "great deal" on stereo speakers. Police urge people to be very cautious when considering whether to purchase items in non-traditional settings. "Buyers beware, it's very risky to buy anything from the back of a van," Celi said. Police suggest asking for credentials before buying any equipment. Anyone with information regarding the scam can contact university police at 621-UAPD.
